Down Hurling Boss to stay on - 28/08/2002

Current Down Senior hurling boss Jimmy O'Reilly has agreed to stay on as manager of the senior side for another year at least.

Ever since he took over the job three years ago O'Reilly has brought a new dimension to hurling in the county. He took over the side when things were far from good. Through hard work and dedication he welded together a squad of players, gave them confidence, recalled some players who had opted out of the county scene, and produced a side that pushed for promotion to Division One of the N.H.L. and also two Ulster S.H.C. Finals.

O'Reillys successful management team of team-trainer Joe McStay and coach John Crossey have also agreed to stay on for another year. While coming to the end of the inter-county season a few months ago some of the more senior Down players had indicated that they may call it a day and that would be a severe setback for the game in the county. However, the news that the management team is set to carry on should see them change their minds.

The impressive showing of the county under-21 side in the Ulster Final against a strong Antrim side gives hope for the future and it is to those players that Jimmy O'Reilly and his management team will be looking to in the future. While the National Hurling League does not commence until next February, plans are advanced for special coaching and training sessions in the months ahead.
