Down seek Walsh Cup entry - 08/01/02

Down have confirmed that they are to seek permission to enter the Walsh Cup, Leinster's second hurling championship.

The idea of the Ulster county playing in the competition was first suggested a couple of months ago but this is the first time that the county will make an official application. The Leinster Council and the Leinster Hurling Development Committee have commented they think the exercise a good idea, but there may be some problems in allowing Down in this year since the draw has already been made. Kilkenny are the only team with a bye in the first round, and they may be abroad for that round.

"We'll try to accommodate (Down) if we can, but it might be logistically difficult. Maybe Meath or Dublin will play a preliminary game," said Leinster secretary Michael Delaney.
