Down Team for Kildare Clash - 14/03/03

Allianz National Hurling League Division 2A
Down 2-22 v Kildare 1-07
@ 2.30 p.m. Portaferry, Co Down on Sunday 15th March 2003

Ten points from the stick of Paul Braniff put Kildare to the sword as Down continued their revival at Portaferry.
Down 2-22 Kildare 1-7

18-points was the gap between the sides at the end and it was a fair result as Down excelled in nearly all areas of the field with their full back line in particular shutting up shop on Kildare's dangermen. The home team led by 0-6 to no score after Paul Braniff hit six early frees and by the half time whistle the advantage was 0-12 to 0-2. David Harney opened the scoring for Kildare but it seemed irrelevant as points flew over his side's crossbar from all angles and distances.

The game looked over as a contest when Gareth Johnston fired Down's first goal immediately on the restart but Kildare hit back through an Eamonn Deneiffe penalty. Any hopes of a comeback were well and truly dismissed as the home side score nine unanswered scored before Martin Coulter got their second goal.
