Down Hurlers draw with Wexford - Challenge Game - 20/01/03

Down hurlers opened their session with a draw against Wexford in a friendly game play on Saturday last in Piercestown. Down 2-09 Wexford 1-12. Down also played Dublin in the Walsh Cup on Sunday which they lost 3-19 to 1-14.

Wexford who featured at least half a dozen first team regulars lead the game at half time 1-06 to Down's 0-06. Wexfords Barry Goff neting the goal. Wexford added another two points on the restart and lead the game by five points as the game entered the final quarter.

Down however staged a late comeback in this game which had seemed to have slipped away from their grasp. Gerard McGrattan and Michael scored two points to put a single goal between the two Sides. Paul Braniff netted a late goal for Down to hand them a very credible result, and one in which they will be hoping they can build on.

Braniff was the man of the match and had an outstanding game in his new role at centre forward, accounting for 1-06 of Down's scores.
