O'Reilly resigns Down post - 06/09/03

PRESS RELEASE

Down hurling has been thrown into a state of flux with the news that outgoing senior county boss Jimmy O'Reilly has resigned.

Reilly had steered the Mourne County in four championship campaigns and achieved provincial championship title success on three occasions. Considered to be one of the most astute hurling coaches in Ulster, O'Reilly confirmed his resignation yesterday (Friday) to county chairman Eamon O'Toole via the telephone.

"He did a marvellous job," O'Toole said of the outgoing Down supremo. "His first big effort came when Down created history in travelling to New York for their Ulster SHC fixture and won in Gaelic Park.

"Jimmy brought a new dimension to preparation of teams and got the utmost out of a limited panel of players. "He has built a solid foundation which should bring good rewards in the future," O'Toole commented.

Chairman O'Toole is understood to have already set up a small sub-committee to make recommendations for a successor to O'Reilly.
