Royals over come dogged Down - 14/04/03

Division 2A Group 1 NHL at Navan - Sunday 13th April 2003

Meath 2-10 Down 0-12

Down fall to a strong Meath side in this top quality NHL match at Navan yesterday. Down fielded without severial first team players due to injury and exams. The 97 spectators who braved the cold and rain watched a game in which both teams played their hearts out.

Down playing with the wind in the first half ran into a 0-04 to 0-01 lead after only ten minutes. Martin Coulter (2), Tom Coulter and Stephen Clarke scoreing for Down while corner forward Evan Lynam scored Meaths score. Both teams exchaged points before Meath's Padraig Coone scored a goal to level the match midway through the half.

Down lifted their game and Gerard Adair scored a point to once again take the lead, but Meath responced with a Nicky Horan free. Both teams once agian exchanged points before Down scored twice to lead the game 0-08 to Meaths 1-03.Points were exchaged again as Down lead the game 0-10 to Meaths 1-06 at half time.

Down opened the socreing in the second half through Martin Coulter, but Meath fought back and leveled the match with scores from Nicky Horan and Dan Dorran. Down edged in front again with a Tom Coulter free. Meath broke the deadlock when Keith Callaghan whoot to the Down net. In the final ten minutes Down threw everthing at Meath and should have had two goals only for great blocks by Meath keeper Mark Gannon. Meath 2-10 Down 0-12.
