Key Down forwards miss Westmeath game - 27/02/04

Down hurlers under the management of John Crossey go into the NHL game with Westmeath at Ballygalget without two of their most potent attackers, Paul Braniff and Gareth Johnston.

The Portaferry clubman Braniff left the fray against Derry after only twenty-four minutes and it has been revealed that he has a hamstring problem which is likely to sideline him for three weeks. He was replaced by clubmate Emmet Trainer on the left wing in the game with Derry in Banagher, and Trainor now retains the berth for the Westmeath clash.

In the case of Johnston, he was somewhat harshly dismissed late in the game against Derry for a pull on Dominic Magill and is suspended. His place now goes to Portaferry’s John Convery who comes in at centre-forward.

Down have started their Division 2A campaign in impressive fashion with their away win over old rivals, Derry. They will be hoping to build on this result this Sunday, but may find Westmeath now under the guidance of former Limerick boss, Tom Ryan much tougher opposition. Playing at home will mean something to the Mourne county at Ballygalget, but Manager Crossey knows that only a top-class performance on this occasion will be good enough to get anything from this encounter. The loss of Braniff and Johnston from the attack makes the job that bit harder!

Down (NHL v Westmeath) – Graham Clarke; L. Clarke, S. Murray, P. Hughes; S. Wilson, G. Savage, Gabriel Clarke; A. Savage, T. McMahon; G. McGrattan, J. Convery, E. Trainor; M. Coulter, Johnny McGrattan, B. McGourty.
