John
Convery has been named at full forward in the
Down team to take on Antrim in the Guinness Ulster
SHC final at Casement Park.
The former Glasgow Celtic and Northern Ireland
underage international soccer player (as pictured)
now plays with Irish League side Portadown, but
he has made quite an impact since joining the
Down hurling squad.
Convery lined out at left corner forward for the
Allianz NHL Division Two final victory over Westmeath,
and is handed the place on the edge of the square
for the Ulster final after coming on as a substitute
in the provincial semi-final win over New York.
With scoring sensation Paul Branniff ruled out
of the game with damaged knee ligaments, Gareth
Johnson moves from the edge of the square to the
centre forward position, leaving Convery room
to come into the team.
Convery is flanked by Micheal Branniff and team
captain Martin Coulter. Meanwhile, U21 star James
Henry Hughes keeps his place at left corner back.
Meanwhile, Antrim have made two changes to the
side that beat Derry in the semi-final. Into the
side comes Darren Quinn at right corner forward.
He replaces the prolific Liam Watson who has not
recovered sufficiently from a knee injury to take
a place in the starting line-up.
Also into the side comes Gerard Cunningham comes
in at right corner back. as an indirect replacement
for midfielder Martin Scullion. Michael McCambridge
moves to right wing back while Ciaran Herron moves
from the wing into midfield to replace Martin
Scullion.
Antrim has been hit hard by injuries in the build-up
to the decider. Michael Magill (hand), Conor Cunning
(knee) and Ciaran Connolly (back) were all unavailable
due to injuries and were not considered.
