Hurlers defeat Wicklow in challenge - 18/02/04

Down 5-24 Wicklow 3-10

Down senior hurlers, under new team-manager John Crossey, concluded their preparations for next Sunday’s opening round of the N.H.L. against Derry with an impressive 5-24 to 3-10 win over Wicklow at the Burren venue.

Following the game Crossey named a 28-man panel for the new season. However, he will have to plan without the services of Andy Savage who suffered a fractured cheekbone against the Garden county and is ruled out for next week-end’s opener against Derry. The Down side will also be without the services of the experienced Tom Coulter who has retired from the inter-county scene, but the panel includes a number of talented newcomers which should give the new county panel a refreshing look.,

The following is the new county hurling panel:
Portaferry – R. Murray, S. Murray, R. Conlon, A. Savage, J. Convery, E. Trainor, P. Braniff and G. McGrattan.

Ballygalget – G. Clarke, L. Clarke, E. Clarke, Graham Clarke, S. Clarke. E. Dorrian, P. Monan, G. Johnson, J. McGrattan, M. Coulter jnr., M. Pucci.

Ballycran – S. McAree, M. Braniff, S. Wilson, B. McGourty, P. Hughes, G. Savage and J. H. Hughes.
Darragh Cross – T. McMahon.

Ballella – D. McCusker.
