Antrim U21's defeat Down in Ulster Final - 22/07/2002

Antrim........2-13
Down..............0-6

Antrim completed a clean sweep of the three major Ulster huring titles with this U21 win over Down. A brace of late goals from Antrim sub Sean Hall ensured that Antrim defeated Down in the under 21 final at Casement Park on Sunday 21st July.

While the Saffrons’ victory was comfortable in the end, Down were very much in contention with a quarter of an hour to play. But a number of clever substitutions turned the tide in Antrim’s favour.

Three points from Paul Braniff and one from Fintan Conway had Down 0-4 to 0-1 in front after 25 minutes. But in the closing five minutes of the half, the home side hit four unanswered points, with Ciaran Herron accounting for two of them.

Within 10 seconds of the restart, Braniff had levelled for the Mournemen and they regained the lead six minutes later when Gabriel Clakre slotted over a ‘65’ - their last score of the game.

Herron restored parity in the eighth minute and in the final quarter, Antrim scored 2-7 without reply to cruise to victory.
