Down outclassed by Kilkenny in U21 Hurling Semi Final at Mullingar - 23/08/2002

ERIN ALL-IRELAND U-21 HURLING S-FINALS - Kilkenny 4-19 1-07 Down

Kilkenny advanced to the final of the Erin All-Ireland U21 HC with ease, after registering a 21-point win over Ulster champions Down at Mullingar on Saturday. The Leinster champions showed no signs of generosity in their game, and at the break led comfortably, 1-12 to 0-5.

Kilkenny's first-half goal came from Willie O'Dwyer. Paul Braniff was the Mourne men's most reliable scorer, and all five points in the first half came from Braniff's hurl from frees. In the second half, he was just as important, scoring his side's goal when he batted Gabriel Clarke's free into the net.

However, that score came long after Kilkenny had wrapped up the match, with three goals in four minutes early in the second half. Four minutes after the restart, Conor Phelan soloed through the Down defence before releasing to Brian Dowling, who finished to the net. Two minutes later, Aidan Fogarty got a third goal, and hardly 60 seconds had passed when Sean O'Neill got the fourth. Gareth Johnson accounted for Down's remaining two points, but they came as little consolation for the Ulster men.
