MAY STEELE MEMORIAL CUP

The third Annual May Steele Invitation seven-a-side ladies football competition organised and hosted by St Malachy’s GAC took place in Castlewellan on Saturday 17th August 2002. The opening rounds of the competition were played on a league basis at Bann Road and Annsborough playing fields with each team playing three games. From the four groups eight teams with the highest point progressed to the quarterfinals, played in St. Malachy's Park.

Clan Eirean and Cooley Kickhams emerged easy winners from the semi-finals with Clan Eirean beating Annaclone 6.8 to 3.3 and Cooley Kickhams beating Bredagh 4.2 to 0.4. In the final Clan Eireann proved to be no match for the Louth champions who trotted home convincing winners with a score line of 6-4 to 2-3 retaining the May Steele cup for the 3rd consecutive year.

Player of the Tournament:
Picking the player of the tournament was a difficult task for guest personalities Seamus Branniff Manager of the Down Ladies All-Ireland Champions 2000, Mary Donnelly Secretary of the Ulster Ladies GAA and Castlewellan's own Mickey McVeigh Down and Ulster goalkeeper. There were so many outstanding players from right across the 16 teams present but in the end it was Roisin O’Hanlon from the Cooley Kickham’s side that impressed the panel most particularly in the final. She now joins her team colleague AnnMarie Murphy (player of tournament 2001) as a holder of this prestigious award.

Presentations:
The presentations were made immediately after the final with the May Steele Cup presented to winning side Cooley Kickham’s by Joan Sloan daughter of May Steele. Each team member was also presented specially commissioned individual Belfast Crystal engraved bowls. The runners up Clan Eireann also received Belfast Crystal engraved bowls and a special Belfast Crystal sponsored crystal trophy went to the Player of the Tournament, presented by Club Chairman John McCartan.

The evening was rounded off with a special Tournament Disco presented by resident Clu DJ McGiggles.
