Girls football set for East Down Primary Schools - 19/03/03

INTEREST in Primary Schools Girls football is increasing in the East Down area. At present Primary Schools girls play in two competitions, indoor and INTO Sevens.

The aim is to increase the number of competitions for girls to participate in with the ultimate aim to form a League. A meeting was held recently with representatives of schools to plan for the future.

To date a total of eleven local Primary Schools have expressed a keen interest in becoming involved in a League.

These include St. Patrick’s (Saul), St. Patrick’s (Mayobridge), St. Colman’s (Saval), St. Joseph’s (Strangford), St. Mary’s (Aughlisnafin), St. Mary’s (Newcastle), St. Joseph’s (Ballycruttle), St. Malachy’s (Castlewellan), St. Mary’s (Dunsford), St. Malachy’s (Kilclief), Holy Family (Teconnaught). It is hoped that a number of other schools will get involved.

At last week’s meeting it was decided that a number of one-day blitz competitions would be the most feasible option for the remainder of this academic year. The first of these competitions will be held on Tuesday 25th March in Newcastle (venue to be confirmed) at 10.00am.

Following this, the preliminaries for the INTO Sevens will be held on Friday 2nd May with the winners of each section going onto the finals on Wednesday 7th May. Finally on the 10th of June a ‘Gala Day’ for the girls will be held in recognition of their participation in all competitions.

In order to cater for Primary Schools who have never participated in ladies football before, a basic coaching course will be organised by Shane King.

Schools/teachers willing to participate in this should contact Mary Kernan at St. Patrick’s P.S., Saul on 028 44614145 with name and details.

The first competition will be held in Newcastle on 25th March, all Primary Schools are welcome. Anyone seeking more information contact Mary Kernan at St. Patrick’s, Saul.
