Ladies Latest - 27/01/03
By P.J. Cunningham (Down Ladies PRO)
The Down Ladies Senior squad continue to
train at the following venues: Tuesday Nights in the INF
Hall in Hilltown from 7:30-8:30pm and Friday's at the all
weather pitch in Downpatrick from 7-8pm.
Preparation for the National League is
slowly gathering pace. The girls already have a very credible
draw under their belts having shared the league points with
the Orchard county ladies in their previous NFL outing.
On Sunday 12th January they entertained St. Mary's College
losing a very competitive game on a 3-09 to 2-13 score line.
The squad has been significantly strengthened
by the return of Aiobhann and Michaela Downey along with
Michele Fearon, Karen Keown and the long awaited return
from injury of Aine Keary. An influx of new talent has also
benefited this young squad with the likes of Kyla Trainor
(Downpatrick), Francis O'Connor (Bright) and Maria McKeown
(Teconnaught) all showing up encouragingly over the last
few months. There's along way to go but the performances
in training and the commitment shown in matches has given
the management of Larry Duggan and Mark Clarke an renewed
optimism which augurs well for the Ladies in the Red and
Black of Down.
For the record the Down Captain for 2003
is Aiobhann Downey (Bosco) who is ably assisted by her vice-captain
Lisa Morgan (Castlewellan).
The next few fixtures for the NFL are:
February 23rd Kildare (A)
March 2nd Roscommon (H)
March 9th Leitrim (H)
Times and venues will be confirmed at a later date.
As the next League game beckons the management
are sending out a SOS to any club who would be able to make
their facilities available to the ladies. With most Clubs
in the county already back in training or at least making
murmurs of doing so the County Board are on the look out
for any club that can provide a pitch for the girls to display
their silky skills on, as they prepare for the forthcoming
NFL fixtures. The ladies are indebted to the clubs who already
make their facilities readily available and indeed it is
the goodwill of these clubs, which will hopefully spur this
bunch of lasses onto glory in 2003.
The County are entering a minor team this
year and with most of the current senior squad available
to selectors, the omens are looking good. It is anticipated
that the minor squad will be officially assembled in Mid
March with Larry and Mark once again at the reins. There
will also be county representation at U-14 level with the
first Championship fixture pencilled in for Saturday 5th
April along with the usual Ulster and All-Ireland Blitz
competitions at this grade later in the year.
All Clubs are reminded that Affiliation
fees are due by 28th February for the coming year, strictly
no exceptions.
The next county Board meeting will be Thursday
6th February @ 7:30pm in the Theraforth Inn Kilcoo.
