Monaghan defeat Down

TG4 Ulster Senior Championship
Down Ladies 2-07 Monaghan Ladies 2-15

Down Ladies travelled to Crossmaglen on Sunday to take on Monaghan Ladies in this senior championship tie. A bright start from the Down ladies yielded 1-02 in the opening 10 minutes with Jenna Connell the goal scorer in chief. Monaghan's Niamh Kindlon fired Monaghan back in front with a well taken goal and they knocked over further points to reach the short whistle 1-08 to 1-04 in front. Downs first half points coming from midfielder Denise Maguire and forwards Emma O'Reilly and Emma Madine.

Down came out for the 2nd half in a positive frame of mind with Michaela Downey kicking over 2 early points to reduce the deficit to 2 points. The Monaghan response was immediate and effective as they added 1-05 without reply. The goal again coming from

the boot of Niamh Kindlon. When Emma O'Reilly saw her late drive hit the Monaghan net, there were only 5 minutes remaining and no time for a red and black comeback. This was a tough encounter but a great effort from every one of the Down Ladies.

Down will now meet Donegal on July 25th, time and venue to be decided.
