Down Relegated to Division Three - 30/03/03

Down 1-10 Armagh 2-14

This Division 11 relegation play-off was played in excellent conditions at Burren last Sunday. However a poor first half performance by the Down girls means they will be plying their trade in Division 111 next season.

In this first period the Down girls squandered too much of their hard earned possession, particularly in the forward line. Armagh stamped their authority on the game from the outset running into an early three-point lead. They continued to punish Down's inability to clear the ball on numerous occasions which enabled them to score 1-11 by the end of the first half. Downs return for the 30 minutes was a mere 3 points.

After the break the introduction of K Keown and E McConville in defence, did stem the Armagh tide slightly. Down had a slightly better second half, which yielded 1-7 but in reality the damage was done in the first half.

Armagh were much more focused, sharper and quicker to the ball than their Down counterparts. They thoroughly deserved their victory and can now look forward to a place in the quarterfinals of the league. Down unfortunately have a long summer run in before they meet Tyrone in the first round of the Championship in July.
