| End
of successful Down camogie season 27/11/2003
The Mourne county will draw the curtain down on
domestic camogie activity for the 2003 season
this Saturday when Clonduff play Attical in the
under-14 championship final commencing at 2pm.
Attical won the league and championship double
last season, but were defeated by Ballycran in
the league semi-final this year – a competition
that Clonduff went on to win.
The Clonduff side on the other hand, have not
won the under-4 championship title since 1998,
but their 3-5 to 3-1 victory over Ballycran last
Sunday has put them through to the final with
every chance of winning the double.
Sarah Louise Carr – daughter of former Down All-Star
footballer Ross scored 1-1 for the winners, while
other scorers were Lisa McPollin 1-0, Ciara Murphy
1-0, Ciara McPollin 0-2, Nichola O’Hagan and Paula
Gordon 0-1 each

in Dunloy and plays for the local club, helped
Antrim to the All-Ireland camogie title this year,
adding to a similar medal she won with Down some
years ago.

An Riocht
pull off coaching coup for underage Camogie
27/10/2003
For the 13 /17 age group things are on the up
in the Mourne Area. An Riocht has pulled off something
of a coup with the appointment of Ursula McGivern
(Armagh manager) and Patricia McAvoy (Crossmaglen
& Armagh player) to coach the Kilkeel girls
over a ten week period upto Christmas.
Other An Riocht Camogie mentors have been about
too as have the hurling coaches. With three weeks
completed things appear to be going well with
the girls and the coaches both enthusiastic and
a steady attendance of twenty-five participants
each night.
Liatroim
maintain outstanding camogie record 23/10/2003
Liatroim Fontenoys collected their 18th successive
Down senior camogie league title at the week-end
when they defeated a gallant Conduff side at home
on a scoreline of 2-6 to 0-3.
Fionnuala Carr, daughter of former Down All-Ireland
and All-Star forward scored all of the Clonduff
sides total of 3 points.
The Liatroim club have completed the league and
chaampionship 'double' for the 13th successive
season in the Mourne county, and have taken 23
league titles in total since their first in 1977.
Interestingly, they are on the look-out for a
senior team coach, and would welcome any enquiries
for the position. Five of the current Liatroim
senior side are in action this Saturday against
Clonduff in the minor camogie championship, and
a very competitive match is expected between these
two great rivals!

Roscommon..........0-03 07/04/2003
Down who are in Division Two for the first time
in some years had a big win of 3-09 to 0-03 over
a disappointing Roscommon side in Strangford.
Recently returned from injury Máirín Mc Aleelan
put in a polished performance with a total of
2-07.

Following a close contest with Down's Helen McAleevy
at the sport’s 2003 Congress in Arklow last weekend.
Miriam, who succeeds Pádhraichín Ní Raifeartaigh,
becomes the first ever Offaly person to hold the
position. Among the many items discussed over
the weekend was the forthcoming alliance with
the GAA, as well as next year's centenary celebrations.

ahead in the CityWest Hotel in County Dublin on

DOWN..........2-05
KILDARE..........2-09 27/03/2003
The Down camogie supporters basking in the sunshine
in Cellbridge on Sunday afternoon must have been
dazzled after watching the second half turnaround
in this national League game. Down looked leg
weary in the opening ten minutes and were hit
by a Kildare goal after forty seconds. Coleen
Reilly led a Down revival with a goal and a couple
of points, to ease Down into a half time lead
going in 2-03 to 1-03 at the interval. Down played
quite well throughout the third quarter but like
their football counterparts down the road in Newbridge
they did not make the most of their chances. Nevertheless
they seemed to be holding on until the home side
came strong in the final ten minutes when they
scored four unanswered points to clinch victory.
This defeat was a setback for Down but it was
not all doom and gloom. Signs are that Down camogie
can reach the heights of a few years ago.
The race
is on to see who will be the next president of
Cumann Camogaiochta na nGael. 25/03/2003
With Congress coming this weekend, delegates will
vote for either Offaly's Miriam O'Callaghan or
Down's Helen McAleevey. Pat Rafferty, who held
the position for the last three years, will opt
out of office when Congress is held in the Arklow
Bay Hotel this Friday and Saturday.
