the first round of
the All-Ireland qualifiers.
Galway v Down
Ulster Council
has enjoyed an unexpected
hurling bonus -
and is confidently
anticipating another.
On Sunday, 5,275
fans turned up for
the drawn Guinness
Senior Championship
final between Antrim
and Down.
This was one of
the best crowds
to have attended
a provincial decider
in the sport in
recent years and
has been attributed
in no small measure
to Down's recent
progress.
Ulster officials
now believe that
the replay on Sunday
next (7.00) will
have similar appeal.
Antrim manager,
Dinny Cahill, who
could shortly be
bringing the curtain
down on his role
with the Saffrons,
praised the contribution
of both teams.
"If this game
had been played
by two teams down
south people would
be talking about
it for the rest
of the year,"
observed Cahill.

Hurlers
win against Derry 22/02/2004 NHL
Round 1: Derry 1-10 Down 0-16 Down's victory came at a cost
with talented forward Paul Braniff forced
to leave the field in the first half
because of a hamstring injury.
Then late in the game, man-of-the-match
Gareth Johnson was sent off for dangerous
play.
With Johnson in fine form, Down dominated
the first half and only some superb
goalkeeping from Kieran Stevenson kept
the Oak Leaf County within six points
of the visitors.
Gregory Biggs'
44th minute goal brought Derry to within
three points of their opponents but
despite a trio of '65s from Dominic
Magill, the home side were unable to
peg back Down.

Junior
hurlers get ready 25/02/2004
THE Down junior hurling panel is in
training for the Ulster JHC game against
holders Donegal on May 2. Currently
some 40 players from all the clubs in
the county, excepting the Ards area,
have had several training sessions under
manager Paddy Braniff sr. The panel
will eventually be reduced to 30. Most
encouraging is the fact that several
of the panel are players who have graduated
through the U-14 and U-16 development
scheme. As part of their preparation
Down will have a game each week against
the county that has the bye in the NHL
Division 3 section.
