Portaferry GAC has congratulated Ciara Mageean on winning a bronze medal for Ireland at the European Indoor Athletic Championships in Glasgow last night.
The 27-year-old was unlucky not to win silver after running a brilliant tactical race in the 1500m. Donegal's Mark English also won bronze in the men's 800m.
"I came in with the aim to win a medal. A part of me is annoyed that I didn't win silver, but if you said to me months ago that I would win bronze, I would have said 'I'll have that'," Ciara said.
Ciara hails from a well-known GAA family in the Down hurling stronghold of Portaferry. Along with her siblings, she has worn the club colours, while her father Chris was part of the Down team that famously relegated reigning All-Ireland champions Kilkenny from Division 1 of the Allianz League in 1993.
Ciara's mother Catherine was also a talented camogie player in her youth.
