St John’s benefit from National Lottery windfall
The National Lottery recently announced that 101 groups in Northern Ireland would share in a £847,374 grants boost from Awards for All.
St John’s GAC were among the main beneficiaries, receiving £10,000 for a road safety project that will be run in conjunction with the IAM RoadSmart to improve driving standards, increase road safety awareness and reduce bad driver behaviour.
The third set of IAM RoadSmart observed drives took place on Saturday 30th July. Experienced volunteers from IAM RoadSmart travelled from Belfast and North Down to accompany our local drivers on a run around local roads. During the drive and again at the end the observers gave individual feedback to our people about their performance.
This initiative is part of St John’s partnership with IAM RoadSmart to promote road safety locally by improving driver skills. The next set of drives will be on Saturday 3rd September. Booking essential - to book you place contact Maureen Ward on 077 9306 6146. Please book as soon as possible so that we can arrange for the correct number of IAM RoadSmart observers to get out to the club.
St John’s and IAM RoadSmart – Sharing the Road to Zero

There were no hills to climb for our walking group on Wednesday past (27th July) as we went along the Coastal Path from Dundrum towards Clough, along what was once the Downpatrick to Newcastle railway line. It was a lovely clear evening with great views over the calm waters of Dundrum Bay on the outward leg and spectacular views towards the Mournes on the way back.
Our next outing will be on Saturday 6th August when we will be walking to Rostrevor from Leitrim Lodge. Apart from fairly steep sections at either end this walk is (more or less) on the level. We will be leaving the club at 9.30am. The next midweek walk will be on 17th August in the Castlewellan area.
