Ulster Scór na nÓg Finals in Downpatrick

On Saturday 13th January, competitors from right across the Province of Ulster will converge at St Patrick’s Grammar School Downpatrick for the Ulster Finals of the Juvenile Cultural showpiece – Scór na n Óg. The Down GAA Cultural Committee is hosting the event and proceedings will get under way at 5pm.

The young people will compete in seven different disciplines comprising of four competitors. They will be finely tuned at this stage having already come through the Provincial semi-finals which comprised of the County Champions from all nine counties. Two competitors from each semi-final were adjudicated to proceed to this great spectacle on Saturday. The disciplines are: Ceili Dancing, Solo Singing, Recitation/Story Telling, Ballad Group, Leíruí Statise (10 min Stage Presentation), Instrumental Music and Set Dancing. There is no doubt this will be entertainment and competition of the highest order.

The host county – Down – will have representatives in four of the finals – Cumann Pheadar Naofa (Warrenpoint) in both Ceili and Set Dancing, Clonduff in Ballad Group and Mayobridge in Leíruí Statise and we take this opportunity of wishing them well. At this stage last year Down emerged with two Ulster titles – Solo Singer Niamh McDowell (Glasdrumman) and Mayobridge Ballad Group. Niamh went on to lift the All Ireland title!

The winners of the Ulster Final will compete against the Provincial Champions from Leinster, Munster and Connaught for the All Ireland title to be held in Sligo in February.
