The Down County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) or Down GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland and is the proud guardian of Gaelic games in County Down, promoting and developing our games and the values of the GAA for players, administrators, members and supporters. From our earliest days, with St Patrick’s, Mayobridge registering as our first club in 1888, we have been at the heart of sporting life in the Mourne County.
On the field, Down has a proud and storied tradition. We were the first team from the North to lift the Sam Maguire Cup in 1960, sparking a golden era that brought further All-Ireland Senior Football titles in 1961, 1968, 1991 and 1994. Famous for our attacking flair and passionate support, Down teams have created some of the most unforgettable moments in GAA history.
While football may be our dominant code, Down is unique in Ulster as a truly dual county. The Ards Peninsula has long been a hurling stronghold, producing clubs and players who have competed and won at the highest levels in Ulster and beyond. Recent years have seen the county hurlers claim Christy Ring Cup honours and take their place in the Joe McDonagh Cup.
Our camogie and ladies’ football teams continue to inspire the next generation, with All-Ireland titles, dedicated coaches, and a thriving network of clubs across the county.
