Ulster Club
Hurling SF:
Ballygalget.....2-15 Dungiven..........2-14
A late point from corner forward
Martin Coulter jnr gave Ballygalget
a dramatic victory over Dungiven
in the Ulster club hurling championship
semi-final at Casement Park
on Sunday, October 17.
It was a heartbreaking defeat
for the Derry champions who
were the better side for long
periods, but faltered in the
closing stages. A Geoffrey McGonigle
penalty helped Dungiven to a
1-10 to 1-5 lead at the break
and they increased their advantage
to eight points shortly after
the restart.
But Down kingpins Ballygalget
never panicked with Stephen
Clarke’s 46th minute goal
proving to be the game’s
turning point.

Ballygalget lifted their 14th
Down Senior Hurling title when
they defeated Portaferry 1-12
to 1-06 in dreadful conditions
at Ballycran.
Portaferry had the wind at their
tails in the opening period
and took a deserved half-time
lead. Slowly but surely Ballygalget
came back into the game and
it was Martin Coulter, jnr,
who rattled in the decisive
goal 12 minutes in the restart.

and Bryansford to represent
Down in Ulster 15/10/2003
Down with Ballygalget capturing
the senior hurling title last
Sunday, Down's two representatives
in the Ulster club championships
are now known. Ballygalget will
have a very tough task in their
opening match in Ulster when
they play Antrim champions and
last year's All-Ireland Club
finalists Dunloy. The game is
fixed for Sunday week October
26th with the Ulster final the
following Sunday. Bryansford
will play in the Ulster club
football championship for the
first time in 26 years. Their
first opponents will be new
Derry champions Loup also on
Sunday 26 October. Both teams
had similar shock wins in their
county finals, Loup against
Ballinderry and Bryansford against
Mayobridge.
Ballygalget
dash Portaferry's hopes of four
in a row 13/10/2003
Down SHC: Ballygalget 0-17 1-10
Portaferry
Portaferry's hopes of claiming
a fourth successive Down Hurling
title were dashed by a hungrier
Ballygalget side at Ballycran.
The holders failed to built
on a great start which saw John
Convery hitting the only goal
of the game in the third minute.
However, some accurate free-taking
by Johnny McGrattan helped Ballygalget
level the contest a 0-7 to 1-4
by the interval and with Gareth
Johnson dominating the midfield
exchanges, they took a firm
grip on the contest in the second
period.
Tom Coulter piled on the misery
for Portaferry with a couple
of superb long-range points
while Paddy Monan also impressed
for the winners with some superb
striking.
