Darragh
Cross Minors defeat St Paul's
St Pauls 3-7 Darragh Cross 5-13
Darragh overcame tough opposition in this exciting
encounter on Sunday in Hollywood. Considering the
wet and windy conditions, there was no shortage of
accurate score-taking and fast passing moves in a
high-scoring affair.
St Pauls opened brightly with a
point, and a goal followed minutes later. Darragh
came back with a perfect response, as a well worked
move resulted in Simon Magee firing to the net, and
almost immediately Mark McMahon put Darragh in front
with another goal. St Pauls then had a good spell
with two unanswered points, followed by a goal to
edge ahead midway through the half.
Darragh midfielder Padraig Mageean
then started to shine. After a good run through the
St Pauls defence he struck to the roof of the net,
and soon after he stroked the ball between the posts
from twenty yards. A St Pauls free late in the half
left the half time scores level, St Pauls 2-4 Darragh
Cross 3-1. Darragh appeared well motivated at the
start of the second half, and points from Padraig
Mageean and two from Eoin Mageean gave them some breathing
space. St Pauls were then awarded a penalty, but couldn't
capitalise as it was put wide of Declan Flynn's goal.
The home side didn't drop their heads and came back
with a point and a goal to level up the scores with
fifteen minutes remaining. However, another Eoin Mageean
score was followed by a fisted point from Mark McMahon
as Darragh took control.
Two points in quick succession from
Hugh Murray and one from Brian Canavan were added
to when McMahon went through to slot it past
the keeper for his second goal of the day. Darragh
were in cruise control and a Brian Canavan goal was
followed by points from Padraig Mageean, Hugh Murray
and Ryan McGreevy. St Pauls battled bravely but in
the end were no match for a determined Darragh side.
Vincent Murray, Ryan McGreevy and
Stephen McClements were excellent in defence, and
Padraig Mageean ran the midfield, linking well with
the forwards to create many scoring chances.
