The
History of the GAA in Down
Sighle
Nic An Ultaigh is affectionately
known in GAA circles as "Down's First Lady". It is a title
richly deserved. From the middle twenties she has been closely
identified with Gaelic life in the Mourne County and in
that time has rarely missed a Down game in either hurling
or football.
She
has accompanied Down teams to every county in Ireland, to
London's Wembley Stadium, to far away New York, Chicago
and San Francisco. Her other great love is Camogie and she
served with distinction as Chairperson of the Ulster Council
1947 - 49 President of the Association 1949 - 53 and Ard
Runai from 1953 - 75.
She is presently a Trustee of the Association.
It is with grateful
thanks that, in this brief history, we publish extracts
from her book "An Dun -The Gaa Story"
