Down minor Camogs into All Ireland Final

22/08/2006

Down Minor Camogs travel to Ballbriggan on Friday 18th August for the All-Ireland Minor B Semi-final. They face Kildare which is an unknown opposition to Down at this grade. Managers Kitty Fegan and Lilian Tinnelly have been working hard with this young side since February and hope to go one better than last season when they were in charge of the U16 team who lost out at this stage to Offaly who incidentaly are up against Antrim in the other semi. A lot of this minor team were on last years U16 panel but have made the transition into the new grading of Minor (U18) with ease. They recently won the Ulster Championship and were unbeaten in the league section of the championship and in a challenge game against Dublin were 1 point winners very impressive as Dublin compete in the A competition. If Sarah-Louise Carr, Karen Tinnelly and Carol Ann Sloan play as they have been doing this season Down should be making their way to an All-Ireland Final in 2 weeks time.

DOWN 0-7 CLARE 0-13

DOWN now face Derry in 2 weeks time after finishing runners-up in this Group of the new look championship. Down played their best camogie to date in the championship but failing to convert frees and conceeding too many frees within scoring distance aided their defeat in Ballyholland. Clare got off to the better start with points from Deidre Murphy and Claire McMahon before Down equalised from Catherine McGourty and Cathy Mullholland. Clare scored 3 points from frees by Claire McMahon to leave the half-time score Down 0-2 Clare 0-5. On the restart it was to play for with points from Deidre Murphy and Catherine McGourty from a 45. Claire McMahon pointed from 1 of Clare's frees before McGourty pointed again. Further scores of the half for Clare came from McMahon 2 from frees Claire Commane & Laura Linnance (2). Karen Gribben and Mairin McAleenan and Catherine McGourty finised the scoring for Down. Claire McMahon & Deidre Murphy were the pick of the Clare team. Finnoula Carr was outstanding in the rejigged Down defence.
