Minor
and U16 Hurling Leagues
Take a Break
The early stages of
the minor and under
16 hurling leagues
have reached a conclusion
with Carryduff and
Bredagh winning the
minor playoffs and
Bredagh and O Rahillys
taking the under 16
promotion spots. Bredagh
Under 16s were first
to qualify with a
playoff victory over
Warrenpoint and they
were joined by O Rahillys
when the Liatroim-
Castlewellan combination
had a convincing win
over Kilclief last
Friday. Monday last
saw the minor playoffs
with Carryduff seeing
off Warrenpoint with
a 1-14 to 0-9 win.
In the other promotion
game, Bredagh inspired
by Cormac Hughes and
Niall Donnelly ran
out 2-14 to 0-10 win
over visiting Liatroim
Fontenoys. The playoff
victories mean that
the successful clubs
are now promoted to
play with the Ards
Clubs in Division
1 and also qualify
for the semi final
stages of the championship
later this year. The
Under 16 and Minor
hurling competitions
now take a break for
exams before resuming
in late June.

Minor
Hurling Qualifier
League starts this
weekend when Mourne
Shamrocks travel
to play Carryduff
on Sunday (12 noon).
Two years ago when
these same sides
met at Under 16
level, they served
up a high scoring
thriller and both
will be looking
for a winning start
to their league
campaign. The opening
series continues
on Monday at 1 when
Warrenpoint host
Kilclief and Clonduff
play Castlewellan.
Tie of the round
however would seem
to be at Cherryvale
where a strong Bredagh
side take on the
combined strength
of Ballyvarley and
Ballela. This St
Patricks combination
are powered by County
minor star Paul
O Neill while the
Hughes brothers
and Niall Donnelly
make the Belfast
team a strong attacking
force - they will
be hoping that home
advantage can swing
the game their way.
The early season
qualifier leagues
determine who will
gain promotion to
the subsequent 'A'
league competition.

Hurling:
Under 16s finish
level
Kilclief and Ballyvarley
played out a hard
fought draw in the
first round of the
Under 16 qualifying
league on Saturday.
Played in Ballyvarley,
the home side had
a starring performance
from midfielder
Tony Hegarty who
hit seven of his
sides points. Barry
Madine was in equally
sparkling form for
the Ben Dearg side
and their midfield
tussle was one of
the highlights of
the game. Despite
strong performances
from James Kennedy
and Kieran Maguire
in the Ballyvarley
defence, Kilclief
were able to hit
three goals and
the final score
of 1-9 to 3-3 was
a fair reflection
of the afternoon's
play. Kilclief also
had excellent displays
from Rory Sharvin,
Barry Fitzsimons
and Terry Mc Alea
while Paddy Mackin
was the pick of
the Ballyvarley
forward line.

Hurling
League commences
Underage hurling
leagues commence
this weekend with
two games down for
decision in the
u-16 competitions.
New meets old on
Saturday (2.30p.m.)
when one of Down's
youngest clubs Carryduff
play host to Ballela
– a more traditional
heartland of hurling
in Down. At the
same time, Kilclief
travel to Ballyvarley
for what should
be a close fought
match. These games
are the first series
in the County Qualifier
leagues which will
eventually result
in two teams gaining
promotion to the
subsequent A leagues;
the top two promoted
sides at the end
of the qualifiers
series will also
qualify for the
'B' championship
semi finals later
in the summer.

Hurling
Competitions draw
to a close
The coming weeks see
a number of underage
hurling finals as
the season draws to
a close. In the Under
16 B Championship
semi finals last week,
Liatroim defeated
St. Patricks on a
4-4 to 2-5 scoreline
while two late Bredagh
goals saw the South
Belfast side overcome
Warrenpoint. The final
takes place on 20
October at 3 pm in
Kilclief. Meanwhile
Kilclief will be hoping
to qualify for the
Under 16 Shield final
when they meet Clonduff
in Sunday's semi final.
The winners will meet
Castlewellan, who
recently defeated
Carryduff in the other
semi.
The Under 14 Shield
final sees Liatroim
clash with Warrenpoint
with date and venue
to be confirmed.

Minor ‘B’ Hurling
Championship Progresses
While County Minor
‘A’ Championship
is still in its
initially stages,
the ‘B’ competition,
involving ‘mainland’
clubs has been progressing
in recent weeks.
Following victories
over Castlewellan
and Liatroim respectively,
Bredagh and Clonduff
met in the County
semi final. In a
close fought game,
it was the Hilltown
team who emerged
victorious to reach
the county final.
On the other half
of the draw, a Ballela-
Ballyvarley combination
known as St Patrick’s
met Carryduff in
the first quarter
final. The young
Carryduff team were
in touching distance
at half time but
the strength of
the St Patrick’s
side, powered by
Paul O Neill and
Mal Magee, saw them
overwhelm the visitors
in the second half.
St. Patricks now
await the winners
of the postponed
Kilclief- Warrenpoint
match in the semi
final. |
