Busy
time for hurlers
DOWN hurling teams
will be doubly engaged
in both the Christy
Ring Cup and the
Nicky Rackard Cup.
The senior side
will travel to London
on July 5 and a
week later they
will play Carlow,
who drew with them
in the opening round
of the NHL Division
2B earlier this
year in Ballycran.
This game will also
be at a Down venue.
The quarter-finals
are due on July
19, the semi-finals
on July 26 and the
final the first
weekend in August.
The South Down side
will play in the
Nicky Rackard Cup.
They have Leitrim
as visitors on June
28 and on July 12
they are away to
Fermanagh. The quarter-finals,

Westmeath, who
drew with Meath
seven days ago,
moved into second
place in the table
thanks to a 2-13
to 1-15 defeat of
Down at Cusack Park.
In what was a repeat
of the 2005 Ring
Cup final, Westmeath
motored into a 2-07
to 0-07 half-time
lead with corner-forward
Derek McNicholas
and full-forward
Dan Carty both finding
the Mourne net.
Down mounted a
comeback on the
back of a Kieran
Courtney goal, but
the Lakesiders,
who face Mayo and
Kerry in the coming
weeks, pulled through
by the smallest
of margins.
Hurlers see
off Kildare
DOWN’S hurlers had
a good win over Kildare
in a senior challenge
game at Ballela on
Sunday. Star of the
side was Clonduff’s
John Murphy, who came
on as a second half
substitute and scored
a goal and a point
to give the Red and
Blacks a two-point
victory. Down were
missing Gareth Johnson
and Brendan McGourty,
who were in Drogheda
with the footballers.
Congratulations

CONGRATULATIONS
to Ballycran minor
hurling star Conor
Woods who was selected
for the second successive
year on to the Bank

Hurling
manager sought
A SPECIAL sub-committee
has been set up to
search for a new county
senior hurling manager.
The task falls to
county chairman Jerry
Quinn, Hurling Board
chairman Brian McAvoy,
Hurling Board secretary
James Keenan, Conor
Watson (Ballygalget)
and Ronan Sheehan
(Newry Shamrocks).
Farrell
steps down
JUST a few months
after being appointed
caretaker senior county
hurling manager Cork
man Sean Farrell resigned
after their defeat
by Carlow in the semi-final
of the Christy Ring
Cup. The search is
now on for a new hurling
manager and one name
that springs to mind
is former Ballygalget,
Down and Ulster star
Gerard Coulter, who
acted as a selector
with Farrell.
Down
2-15 Meath 0-11
Down have secured
their place in the
semi-finals of the
Christy Ring Cup with
one match to spare
thanks to a convincing
win over Meath at
Ballycran.
Paul Braniff got
both goals for Sean
Farrell's men who
led 1-8 to six points
at half-time.
It means the Ardsmen,
who reached the
2005 final, preserve
their unbeaten record
in this year's competition.
Down now wait to
hear who their opponents
will be for the
semi-finals due
to be played on
Saturday 22 July.
Hurling injuries
mount
THE injury crisis
in the Down hurling
panel mounts weekly.
At present star forward
Martin Coulter requires
surgery on a cruciate
ligament injury, defender
Stephen Murray has
a broken finger, and
the midfielders, Ciaran
Coulter (hamstring)
and Andy Savage (broken
bone in foot), are
also injured. To make
matters worse the
Newry Shamrocks duo
of Kieran Courtney
and Eoin McGuinness
are suspended, having
been given red cards
in football games.
Christy
Ring fixtures
DOWN’S next game
in the Christy Ring
Cup is this Saturday
when they travel
to Roscommon. On
July 8 they have

in London on July
15.
The semi-finals
of the competition
are scheduled for
July 22 and the
