Annaclone Notes
- 23rd June 2006
Annaclone 1-09
Shamrocks 1-07
Annaclone came out on top of a bottom of
the table clash with Newry Shamrocks on
Friday night in Gaelic Park. It was a
scrappy affair from the start due to
both teams being under a lot of pressure
to get points on the table.
Colm Fegan opened the scoring with a
free after Gary Byrne opened the game
with a bone crunching shoulder tackle to
steal possession early on. Owen Pyers
took a nice point either side of two
scores from the visitors. Owen was again
on target when he picked up a ball from
John Haughey and finished to the net. He
then turned provider for Martin Farrell,
who neatly pointed from close range.
Three frees from Aidan Fegan kept
Annaclone 6 points ahead, but disaster
struck when captain Martin McAleenan had
to withdraw injured and the visitors
stole a goal soon after. Martin Farrell
replied with a left footed point on half
time. Unfortunately for the crowd
attending the second half turned into an
abysmal affair a total of 6 scores
during the half. Owen Pyers and Aidan
Fegan grabbed the only scores of the
half for the locals in what turned into
one of Annaclone’s poorer performances
of the year but either way the locals
claimed 2 points and that’s all that
really mattered on the night.
There were some good performances
throughout the team but special mention
goes to Niall Higgins who put in a great
performance on his first run out for the
first team.

Reserve Championship
Annaclone II 2-06
Bryansford II 1-14
Annaclone went out of the Premier
Reserve Championship on Sunday at home
to a strong Bryansford team. Annaclone
gave the East Down side a big head start
before getting into the game with a
point from Seamus Quinn. Kieran McGrath
grabbed an opportunistic goal at the end
of the half to leave the locals 9 points
down at half time. In the second half
Annaclone put the Newcastle side under
pressure with points from Seamus Quinn,
Sean Byrne, John Fegan, Gary Byrne and a
great goal from Colm Farrell. Some good
defending from Niall Higgins and Michael
Wallace meant Mark McNeill could keep
his goal in tact on his come back and
Annaclone could come out of the game
with their pride in tact.

Minors
Attical 1-12
Annaclone 3-07
Annaclone got their first win of the
season away to Attical last Wednesday
night. Goals from Paraic McNeill and
Sean Greenan along with points from Owen
Pyers and Michael Wallace gave the
locals a 2 point lead at half time. Owen
grabbed a point early in the second half
but that signalled the start of an
Attical comeback. They registered 4
unanswered points before captain Michael
Wallace replied with 2 points, one from
a 45 and another from play. Sean Byrne
added a free between two points from the
home side. Owen Pyers took a solo score
to put Annaclone ahead before Cathal
McAvoy got pulled down for a penalty
that Michael Wallace duly converted.
Niall Higgins, Gareth Greenan and Brian
McGivern had to hold out an immense
amount of pressure from the home team to
hold on for the win.
