Attical go down battling in Ulster Semi Final

TAKEN FROM MOURNE OBSERVER

AIB Ulster Intermediate Club semi-final: POMEROY 1-9 ATTICALL 1-6

ATTICALL went down battling in this Ulster Intermediate Club semi-final at Crossmaglen.

They were seriously affected when midfielder Paddy Sloan had to retire with an injury early in the second half. Afterwards Pomeroy’s Ciaran Slane ruled the roost at midfield and with Louis Sloan not available, Atticall’s options were limited.

Before he went off, Paddy Sloan started the move that led to Oliver Sloan being fouled and Miceal Sloan converted the penalty. Back at the other end it took heroics from Paddy McAstocker to deny Pomeroy a goal. Eventually a penalty was conceded which Slane converted. Atticall, with the wind behind them, played their best football before the interval and a series of attacking moves involving Philip, Miceal and Ollie Sloan and Gary Morgan helped the Mourne men to score five times without reply.

Atticall led 1-6 to 1-4 at the break but found the wind too much for them in the second half. McAstocker, Brendan Sloan and Paul Trainor defended valiantly but eventually Pomeroy drew level and went on to win by three points.

Atticall did themselves proud considering the loss of Louis Sloan and Paddy Sloan from midfield. In the end they just hadn’t the physical strength to impose themselves on the team that are favourites to take the Ulster Intermediate title.

Atticall: Paddy McAstocker, Aaron Sloan, Brendan Sloan, Paul Trainor, Shane Fitzpatrick, Kieran Small, Keith Morgan, Paddy Sloan, Mark Sloan, Philip Sloan, Mark Doran, Mark Trainor, Gary Morgan 0-4, Oliver Sloan 0-2, Miceal Sloan 1-0. Martin McGee for P Sloan.
