Ballymatrin Notes for week of 24th Nov

P.j. Cunningham

***Ballymartin U-21's got their campaign off to a flyer on Sunday with a well deserved win over seasoned campaigners Newry Shamrocks. This was the first time the lilywhites had fielded a team at this level and this very young side were certainly up to the challenge. Newry Shamrocks dictated the opening 15 mins of play but they were continually frustrated by a very tigerish Ballymartin rearguard that didn't yield scores too easily with Austin Crawford and Sean Trainor outstanding in the fullback line. Shamrocks did manage 3 points in this period but when John Fitzpatrick (Carginagh) soloed through for Ballymartin's opening score, this seemed to unleash a new sense of belief that Ballymartin could go on and win this one. Further points from Rory McManus, Peter Fitzpatrick, John Fitzpatrick and a great goal from Rory McManus saw Ballymartin reach the interval on level scores Ballymartin 1-04, Shamrocks 0-07. Shamrocks started the 2nd period brightly and raced into a 3 point lead but Ballymartin remained calm and the use of the early ball to a speedy full forward line was causing the Newry men all sorts of problems. Ballymartin continued to keep within touching distance of Shamrocks for the next 20 minutes with points from Peter Fitzpatrick, Paul Fitzpatrick, John Fitzpatrick and another goal from Rory McManus. Ballymartin finally came to life in the last 10 minutes adding 2-03 in this period to end this game as a contest. The scores coming from Rory McManus (1-01), John Fitzpatrick (1-01) and Peter Fitzpatrick (0-01). Final Score Ballymartin 4-11 Shamrocks 1-11.
