U-14s beat Darragh Cross
East Down U-14 League, Wed April 16 - Bredagh 5-6
Darragh Cross 4-5
A depleted Bredagh outfit played some scintillating
football to win this match played at Cherryvale. Although
they went behind early on, Bredagh rallied and scored
a superb goal crafted by the ever-impressive midfielder
Paddy Donnelly and Roan Smart for Sean Irwin to finish
well. Darragh Cross went ahead soon after but Bredagh
upped their game and goals from John McKenna and Roan
Smart put them into a lead they were never to lose.
The second-half saw a tighter back
division from Bredagh marshalled by the superb Mark
McElroy, Matthew Hollywood and Declan O'Hara. John
McKenna and Sean Irwin scored further goals and Cormac
Hughes looked too classy for Darragh Cross as he clipped
over a couple of points. Debutant Simon McCluney led
the line well and improved as the game went on. There
was a grandstand finish as Darragh Cross scored a
couple of late scores, but Bredagh's class was never
in doubt - nor was the result.

Bredagh 5-8 Liatroim 8-6, Cherryvale
10th April 7pm
Bredagh U-16s and the much-fancied Liatroim served
up a cracker at Cherryvale on Thursday April 10 in
the opening game of the league. The visitors raced
into a big lead, 3-4 to 0-0, and it looked even worse
for Bredagh at half-time when they trailed by 5-4
to 0-6. But, a magnificent comeback saw the home side
score five second-half goals.
Paul Boyd and Michael Diffin got
the first two goals to give Bredagh the lift they
needed. Further points from Declan Noble and Paul
Boyd rattled Liatroim, and then brilliant goals from
Paul McCurry and James Johnston brought the scores
level. The boys had run their heart out for the jersey
and started to tire. The game turned again when Liatroim
got and converted a dubious penalty after a brilliant
Neil Poland save, followed by another goal, but still
the Bredagh lads fought back and stand-in full-forward
Conal Short scored a great goal to put the cat among
the pigeons once more.
Liatroim responded for a final time
with a goal and a point to seal a fantastic game.
These Bredagh lads have a lot to be proud of. They
played their hearts out and it shows what team spirit
and a love of the game can do. Every player played
their part and it would be difficult to single anyone
out but Aiden O’Neill, Stephen Gray, Paddy Cassidy
and Dermot Coffey gave everything they had in defence
while James Johnson, Kevin Harte, Paul McCurry and
Declan Noble ruled the midfield for long periods.
BTW, Bredagh's six first-half points came from Declan
Noble, Paul McCurry, Paul Boyd, Aiden O’Neill and
James Johnston (2).
TEAM & SCORERS: Neil Poland,
Niall Boyle, Dermot Coffey, Lawrence Maginness, Paddy
Cassidy, Stephen Gray, Aiden O’Neill 0-1, Kevin Harte,
James Johnston 1-2, Declan Noble 0-2, Paul McCurry
1-1, Paul Boyd 1-2, Joe Steele, Conal Short 1-0, Michael
Diffin 1-0, Jason McMurray and Jonathan Pup Arthurs.
Minor update
St John's 0-5 Bredagh 1-10 , St John's 15th April
6.45pm
Managers Jim Alexander and Pat Matthews masterminded
a fine victory that stops the rot for the Minors in
Section B. A few away defeats had dented morale, but
all fifteen players who travelled performed very well.
In fact, Pat Matthews described it as the 'best performance
I have ever seen by this group of players'.
Eight different players scored and
the defence was watertight, conceding only five points.
Chris Donnelly slotted in the full-back line, with
Paul McGlade in the middle and Conor Sharvin on the
left. The half-backs were also excellent, with Sean
Coleman and Conal O'Neill even getting on the scoresheet.
Thanks also to Martin Hannity and Pat Matthews' sister
for helping with transport.
TEAM & SCORERS: Eddie Burns,
Chris Donnelly, Paul McGlade, Conor Sharvin, Brian
Willigan, Sean Coleman 0-1, Conal O'Neill 0-1, Conor
Carson 0-2, Paul Alexander 0-2, Ciaran Conlon 0-1,
Rory McCaughey 0-1, Ronan McCann 1-1, Michael Lee,

Bredagh seniors lose opening two
games by 3 points
Bredagh 0-6 Bright 0-9, Cherryvale 11th April 7pm
Bredagh lost out to Bright in their opening league
game at Cherryvale on Friday night. This was a poor
game with the home side 'ring-rusty' and the visitors
more determined. A low scoring first half saw Bright
lead 0-3 to 0-2 at half-time with the home scores
coming from John Rogers and Johnny Cleary.
Bredagh took the initiative on the
restart and 3 Johnny Cleary frees opened up a 2 point
advantage. Bright plugged away and 3 pointed frees
restored their narrow advantage. Bredagh then put
together the best move of the game when good defensive
work by Shane Donnelly and Stephen Kelly put in Kevin
Muldoon who fed the ball to Conor O'Keefe. A blistering
shot hit the wrong side of the post and gave fresh
hope to the visitors who scored 3 unanswered points.
A late score from Cleary left the
final score Bredagh 0-6 Bright 0-9.

Bredagh 0-7 St Paul's 1-7, Cherryvale 14th April
7pm
Bredagh lost their second league game by 3 points
to a poor but physical St Pauls side at Cherryvale
on Monday night. In a low scoring first half neither
team played with conviction and a Mal Smith point
was the only return for Bredagh, the visitors leading
0-2 to 0-1 at the interval. Bredagh came out fired
up and played decent football to score 3 unanswered
points.
A scrappy goal for the Hollywood
men put them ahead but Brian Hegarty recorded the
best two scores of the night before responding to
serious provocation and ending up with a red card.
This marked the end of Bredagh's challenge and despite
good scores from Brendan O'Connell and Johnny Cleary
, St Pauls sent over 4 successive frees to claim the
points.
