Carryduff Reserves Gain Revenge Against Saval

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carryduff Reserves gained revenge for the Saval defeat of the Senior Team two days previously. In the blistering heat of the midday sun, both teams played out a clean and keenly fought contest.

Carryduff opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a finely executed pointed free from centre half forward Ciaran Conway. This was followed up on 11 minutes with a floated point from distance by Ruairi McKay.

Meanwhile Saval were registering their scores at will with 5 points from play in 15 minutes. Once again Ciaran Conway was to keep Carryduff in touch with when he got on the end of the ball in the square to poke the ball past the approaching Saval Keeper.

Carryduff allowed the attacks to break down easily in the Saval half and this failure to retain possession was proving costly. Saval on each occasion broke forward at pace and punished the Carryduff mistakes with supreme accuracy through well placed points from play.

A Sean Molloy pointed free from 30 metres and a fortunate point that bounced in front of the Saval Keeper from Kevin McGoran ensured Carryduff remained within touching distance of Saval. Indeed if a well worked move involving Mikey Gilmore and Ciaran Conway had worked out Carryduff may have gone in at half-time all square. Unfortunately Mikey was unbalanced and the ball went tamely the wrong side of the goal.

Half-time Score Carryduff 1-04 Saval 0-10

At half -time Carryduff made four substitutions. Richard Carey came on at midfield in replacement for Ben Fitzsimons and made an immediate impact. In the 4th minute he received the ball 30 metres out from the Saval goal on the right wing. Moving at pace, Richard unleashed a riveting and unstoppable punt of the ball to the roof of the Saval net to bring the teams all square.

Inspired by this goal Carryduff responded with 4 points from play, two from Chris O’Neill and one a piece from Ciaran Conway and Richard Carey. There then followed a brief and short lived purple patch from Saval which yielded two points. However once again Carryduff were to respond with a brilliant piece of individual play from Richard Carey resulting in the tide swinging in their favour. Richard received the ball this time on the Carryduff 45 metre line and soloed the full length of the field before drilling the ball over the bar from 30 metres out.

The drama then unfolded more when Darren Price found himself on the end of a pass 13 metres from goal. Darren showed great composure to register his first ever goal in a Carryduff Senior shirt. The much jubilation that ensued may have acted as a distraction as Saval hit back with a goal of their own almost immediately. However Carryduff showed great grit and determination when Chris McConville found Andy Moorehead 30 yards out. Andy managed to shrug off his defender, went direct to goal and buried the ball in the bottom corner, giving the Saval Keeper no chance.

Saval never give up and managed to register 3 points from play. Notably their nifty corner forward was proving a handful as he weaved his way goal ward on too many occasions. The scoring was rounded off when Chris O’Neill, returning from injury, pointed from play to give Carryduff a much deserved 4 point victory.

U16 Girls Beat Bredagh

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The u16 Ladies Squad which overcame Bredagh

On Sunday the ladies u-16 team had a home fixture against neighbours Bredagh. Played in ideal conditions the Carryduff ladies opened the scoring with a Megan Doherty point. The game was closely contested in this first period with the Carryduff defence clearing of the goal line on a number of occasions.

Maeve Magennis was at the core of the defensive resistance while Ciara Doherty was responsible for thwarting numerous Bredagh attacks and these ladies were well backed up by Julie Coulter and Tara Bergin. At centre field and centre back the Magorrian sisters Emma and Hanna worked tirelessly throughout the match while Eadaoin Early and Alannah Connery continually pressurised the Bredagh defence.

This paid off with Bronagh Kerr finishing off Carryduff attacks with two well taken goals. Julie Coulter worked her way through and notched over another point. Lee Ann Murray, Megan Doherty and Maria Lundy combined well in the support play for these scores.

Bredagh were unlucky not to have levelled matters as a combination of attacks by Nikki Pauley, Cassie Moane, Ciara Maguire, Peita McAlister and Sarah Nugent were scrambled of the Carryduff goaline. The Carryduff keeper Katie McCann continues to impress with excellent goal keeping and intelligent clearing.

Half time score Carryduff 3-02 Bredagh 0-02

Bredagh dominated the start of the second period getting two early goals and a point. The Bredagh backs in particular Emma Guerin, Roisin Smylie and Sarah Montgomery were now more effective in closing down the Carryduff attacks.

Carryduff's three substitutes had an influence on the final outcome with Emma Hannah finding the net, Alison Hoy taking a point and Caoimhe Quinn playing well along the wing. Corner back Ciara Rooney was always in control and with strong runs out of defence set up Carryduff to go on the attack.

This was a good team performance from the Carryduff ladies but overall the main influencing factor in Carryduff’s victory was the performance of Kate McKay. She controlled the middle sector throughout this match and her final 30m pile driver to the Bredagh net crowned a top rate performance.

Unlucky Friday 13th For Seniors

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carryduff Seniors played Saval at home in the first match of their 2007 campaign, on unlucky for some, Friday 13th April.

Saval started the livelier with their half forward line of Daniel and Gareth Hughes and Gavin Quinn making promising and telling moves from the throw-in. Within the first 5 minutes Saval had 6 shots on goal from open play. However with a return of only two points, it was evident Carryduff defenders John Lavery, Damien Teague and James McKernan were determined and prepared to hassle the Saval forwards.

Carryduff were beginning to combine their play from defence to attack and were unfortunate not to take the lead. Full Forward Richard Carey found himself completely alone in front of goal, beat the keeper but unfortunately hit the post, with the rebounding ball falling kindly for Saval. Two minutes later Carryduff did open the scoring with a goal, when Aidan McGirr found himself one on one with the Saval keeper.

Saval were themselves proving to be handful in front of goal and responded with three further points from play. Carryduff were then awarded a penalty when Sean Mullan attempted to round the keeper and was pulled down. However it was not Carryduff's night in front of goal as Aidan McGirr missed the target. Further goal opportunities fell to Sean Mullan and Sean Molloy but unfortunately both failed to capitalise on their chances.

Thankfully Saval were also wasteful and registered only two further points from play, completely the first half with a total of 8 wides. Saval did manage to hit the net themselves when a ball lobbed into the goal area was disallowed for square ball.

Carryduff ended the half on a high with a quick passage of play from the back-line involving Damien Teague, Ben Fitzsimons and Barry O’Neill which ended with a magnificent point from Ruairí McKay from 25 yards out.

Half-time score Carryduff 1-01 Saval 0-6.

The second half started with Saval opening the scoring with a pointed free in the first minute. Saval were more dominant in the middle of the park, with Carryduff over reliant on Eamon O’Neill breaking the ball. Three further Saval points from midfielder Michael McCarthy, Daniel Hughes and half back Darren Cunningham were registered in the next 15 minutes of play.

Although Carryduff had not scored in the first twenty minutes of the second half, Conor Brennan making his Senior debut for Carryduff, made some telling moves to at times bridge the gap with the forwards. Carryduff responded further by moving Adrian Scullion to midfield and almost immediately he began to make a difference. His presence and fielding resulted in him recording two points in quick succession 35 metres from goal.

Carryduff had at last began to show a willingness to win and things began to look more promising. However the determination was not to be rewarded as again accuracy in front of goal was lacking with three consecutive wides from play. A further point from play by Adrian Scullion reduced the deficit to three points. In the last few minutes Carryduff were rewarded a free 30 metres from goal but Shane O’Neill committed the cardinal sin and dropped the ball short.

This was not to be Carryduff’s night with ample chances to put the game beyond Saval reach, particularly in the first half. However the game certainly left the large crowd with a lot to talk about, with lots of hope for a promising season ahead.

Carryduff Reserves Defeat Loughinisland

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carryduff Reserves eventually triumphed over Loughinisland on Easter Tuesday. Both teams took some time to settle with the game played at a pedestrian pace in the first 10 minutes of play.

Carryduff opened the scoring with two well taken frees from Ronan McLaughlin in the 3rd and 4th minutes. Carryduff continued to shoot at will but were unfortunate not to convert any scores in the next 15 minutes. Sean Molloy, Richard Carey and Kevin McGoran all had their chances.

Carryduff conceded frees in the danger zone too frequently. Loughinisland responded well by converting 3 of these opportunities in quick succession to register their only scores of the first half. Eventually Carryduff got the score they deserved. A shot at goal on the 20th minute was parried by the Loughinisland goalkeeper, and when the ball broke free, Sean Molloy pounced to hit the back of the net. The next 10 minutes proved to be scrappy with little or no goal mouth action.

Half-time score Carryduff 1-02 Loughinisland 0-3

In the second half Carryduff again got their chances in front of goal but were unlucky not to capitalise. Sean Molly pointed from play on the 6th minute. Loughinisland replied in the 8th minute and were themselves wasteful with their opportunities. Carryduff goalkeeper Jason Scott saved well from a drilled shot on goal. Indeed this game was to be won with a defensive approach required in order to prevail.

Loughinisland made tactical changes and attempted to run at Carryduff at will. However the defence held strong with Plunkett Kelly asserting and showing good leadership in the full-back line. Mikey Gilmore and Phil Davey in half-backs and Conor Brennan and Ruairi McKay in half-forwards shepherded their opponents well.

The next scores occurred in the 17th and 18th minutes for Loughinisland to draw level. At this stage Carryduff needed a score to lift their game. Ronan McLaughlin obliged with a finely executed point from a free 30 yards out. From the subsequent kick-out the ball landed to Ruairi McKay 25 yards from goal. With the goal empty, Ruairi lobbed the ball with supreme accuracy to score a much needed goal.

Within 2 minutes Ricahrd Carey took a point with a drilled shot from an acute angle. This gave Carryduff a 5 point cushion with 7 minutes remaining. Loughinisland were frustrated and discipline suffered resulting in a straight red card for one of their players.

Loughinisland fought to the end and scored two further points from play. However Carryduff held out for a well deserved victory.
