Clann na Banna 2-8  Darragh Cross 2-18

By Daniel Murray

Clann na Banna 2-8  Darragh Cross 2-18

Darragh Cross came away with the points on Friday night after a ten-point win in wet conditions in Banbridge. This win puts Darragh clear at the top after seven wins from seven in the league, as they prepare to face second place Tullylish at home this Friday.

Liam Sloan curled over the opening point, and frees from Marcus Miskelly and a point from Gary Kennedy left the visitors leading by 0-4 to 0-1 midway through the first half. Clann na Banna got two quick points, but Kennedy and Miskelly were in top form and got a point apiece to restore the three point advantage. The home side then leveled up the game with a goal, after a fast attack left the Darragh full back line exposed. Liam Sloan hooked over another point after a fine block and pass from Dermot Timoney, and Eoin Mageean also fired over for Darragh, but a late Banbridge point left the Darragh leading by 1-4 to 0-8 at the break.

Marcus Miskelly got the first point of the second half for the away side, and shortly after, Mark McMahon’s shot crept inside the near post and into the net for Darragh. Clann na Banna got a point back, but Darragh moved further clear with points from Kennedy (2), Miskelly and a Marty Healy point from a narrow angle. Kennedy and Miskelly continued to torment the Clann na Banna backline, and added three more scores either side of two points for the home side. Gareth McGovern came on to add two points to Darragh’s total, but Clann na Banna reduced the deficit to seven points after scoring from the penalty spot late on. Any hopes of a comeback were short-lived, as Marty Healy put the seal on another win with a fine finish in off the post to the net. Best for the winners were Liam Sloan, Padraig Mageean and Eugene Murray, while Gary Kennedy and Marcus Miskelly were a constant threat in attack.

Darragh Cross scorers: M Miskelly (0-7), G Kennedy (0-5), M Healy (1-1), M McMahon (1-0), G McGovern (0-2), L Sloan (0-2), E Mageean (0-1)
