Glasdrumman
extend unbeaten run - 27/07/03
ACFL
Div 2: Carryduff 2-05 Glasdrumman 2-09 - 25/07/2003
By John Brennan Glasdrumman G.A.C.
Glasdrumman
made the journey to Carryduff on Friday night hoping to extend their unbeaten
run despite the absence of key players due to holidays and injuries. Glasdrumman
were first off the mark in the second minute when Shane Feeney opened the scoring
with a point but within two minutes Carryduff were ahead with a goal from Stephen
Moohan. A minute later Cathal Curran extended their lead with a point and in the
sixth minute the same player scored his second point of the game.
Carryduff
looked very comfortable on the ball at this stage of the game and Glasdrumman
seemed to be struggling to come to grips with the wide open spaces of the large
pitch. Four minutes later Michael Mulrine added another point for Carryduff. Two
points within two minutes from Cormac Murphy and Paul McDowell cut the Carryduff
lead as Glasdrumman fought hard to get back into the game but in the twenty sixth
minute they were dealt a hammer blow as some slack defensive play let Jason Scott
in for Carryduff's second goal of the game. Inspired by this Carryduff put on
the pressure and they were rewarded with a point from centre half back Gerard
Scullion to leave the halftime score Carryduff 2-4 Glasdrumman 0-3.
After
their performance in the first half the Glasdrumman team knew that if they stood
any chance of winning the game they needed a super human effort from every player
on the field but their determination was dented when Carryduff extended their
lead to eight points when Cathal Curran knocked over the first point of the half.
However the score seemed to inspire Glasdrumman and they responded almost immediately
with a point from Mick Mooney.
In the ninth minute the same player was
taken down by the Carryduff goalkeeper and Cormac Murphy confidently stroked the
resultant penalty to the net. Within two minutes the ball was again in the back
of the Carryduff net this time from the boot of Raymond Clarke and Glasdrumman
were back in business. Three minutes later and the game was all square with a
point from the boot of super sub Raymond Magorrian. Carryduff tried to steady
the ship but Paul McDowell knocked over a point to put Glasdrumman in the lead
for the first time. A mistake in the Glasdrumman defense let Jason Scott through
one on one with the goalkeeper but his shot was brilliantly saved by Paul Brennan
and the ball was delivered to Paul McDowell in the half back line.
As the
Carryduff players backed off, Paul confidently carried the ball forty yards before
hitting a brilliant point. Glasdrumman kept up the relentless pressure and Cormac
Murphy knocked over two more points to leave the final score Carryduff 2-5 Glasdrumman
2-9.
