Glasdrumman CAC held its annual
awards and dinner dance in the
Balmoral Hotel in Warrenpoint on
Saturday night with a large number
of guests in attendance.
Guest speakers were County Chairman,
Kevin Bell, and winner of two All
Ireland Senior Football medals,
Eamon Burns.
Club Chairman, John Brennan, started
by thanking the 2006 senior
management and coaching team of Sean
Colgan, Christopher Cunningham,
Gerard McCartan and Terry Joyce
along with the senior football squad
who gave their utmost commitment in
training and competition in helping
the club retain Division 2 status.
John also thanked senior team
sponsors, Quinn's Bar, Newcastle for
their continued support of the club.
John went on to express the clubs's
thanks to those who managed and
mentored the Juvenile teams for
their invaluable assistance and
commitment, ensuring the succesful
participation of the younger players
in Gaelic games with the U14 team,
amalgamated with Attical, winning
their league and finishing runners
up in the championship and the U18
team, including the U16 players,
winning Division 3 in South Down.
Mentors for the U10 and U12 (GO
Games) - Michael Grant, Paul
Cunningham and Jeremy Murray, U14 -
William James Smith and Liam
Harrison and U18 - Kevin Burns, Colm
Carr and Gary McGreevy. A special
thanks was reserved for Attical GAC
for their joint effort and continued
support for underage Gaelic games in
the area.
John thanked the club's Senior
referee, Patrick Trimble, for his
contribution through the year and
asked that anyone else interested in
contributing as a referee to come
forward. He then went on to thank
everyone who had represented and
supported the club in Scor, again
asking anyone interested in
representing the club to come
forward.
John then thanked those who worked
quietly in the background, cutting
and preparing the football pitch,
driving the minibus, linesmen,
umpires, TOTE and gate money
collectors, tea makers, score board
operators, bingo organisers and
fundraisers, with a special word of
thanks to Agnes Joyce for the
preparation of the Senior team kit.
John thanked the local Primary
School, St. Mary's, Glasdrumman, and
the Friends Of The School Asociation
for their support of the club and
their continued interest and support
of Gaelic Games. John also commended
local schools St. Louis and St.
Columbans, Kilkeel and St. Malachys,
Castlewellan for their continuing
progress in Gaelic Games at all
levels, and thanked Glasdrumman's
players for their involvement.
John expressed congratulations to
William James Smith on his election
to Chairman of the South Down Board
and Liam Murphy on his appointment
to the County U21 management and
coaching team and thanked both for
their sound advice. John also
congratulated Cormac Murphy on his
recent appearance for the Down
Senior Football Team.
John then thanked the club Committee
for their help throughout the year
with a special word of thanks to Jim
Cunningham, who stepped down this
season as Treasurer after more than
30 years in the post, and Dan
McCartan, who stepped down as
Chairman after 5 years.
John offeredcondolences to those
connected with the club who were
bereaved through the year and also
congratulated those who celebrated
marriages or births.
John finished off by thanking the
club's supporters of all ages,
"Being a true Gael is about local
people, playing their native game,
representing their local parish
community and being there for each
other, both on and off the field of
play".
Kevin Bell thanked the club for
inviting him and his wife,
Jacqueline, to the evening's event
and wished William James Smith and
Liam Murphy luck in their new roles
at County level. He emphasised that
although Glasrumman was a small club
it was a club with a big heart and
one that was very well respected
throughout Down for its commitment
to Gaelic games and culture. He
ended by wishing the club well for
the year ahead.
Eamon Burns also thanked the club
for his and his wife's, Sinead,
invitations. He emphasised that in
continuing the hard work already
being carried out with the Youth
players, Glasdrumman will continue
to progress as a club. He finished
by wishing the club well for the
year ahead and encouraging the club
to "think big and have a go".
A superb new trophy was donated to
the club by the Grant family, to be
awarded annually to the Supporter of
the Year.

The band for the evening, Hopscotch,
then took centre stage to round the
evening off in fine style.

Murphy who made his senior debut for
Down in the match against Meath in
Newcastle on Sunday 28th January.

Congratulations to the St.
Mary's Primary School quiz team who
finished fourth in the Down Final of
the Cumann na Bunscoill GAA Quiz and
qualified for the Ulster Final, to
be held in the Tullyglass Hotel,
Ballymena on 6th March.

Senior Football training
commences again at 7.30 pm on Monday
5th February and will continue on
Wednesday and Friday nights until
further notice. New players are very
welcome.
