Liatroim - East Down Minor “B” Champions 2003

Liatroim minors had an excellent start to the new
year with a comfortable win over close neighbours
St. Johns, followed by further easy wins over Ardglass,
Bright, Kilclief and Teconnaught. The first real test
for the young Fontenoys came away from home to a very
talented Bredagh side. Liatroim faced up to the challenge
very well and got their reward with a last minute
penalty, which was calmly slotted home by Paul McCabe
to deservedly clinch the match.
The Fontenoys continued their winning
streak with another routein win over St Johns. Liatroim
then faced joint league leaders Darragh Cross. After
trailing by six points at half time the Fontenoys
stepped up a gear to win by three points, inspired
by great displays from Simon McCartan, Brendan McKay,
Gerard Murphy, Seamus O’Rourke and a whole host of
others. Another great second half display brought
Liatroim another two points against a strong Ardglass
team, the best displays this time coming from Martin“super
sub”Duggan, Michael Murphy, Mark Fitzpatrick, Paddy
O’Rourke, Michael McCartan and Brian Morgan. Although
the result was just what Liatroim wanted, a dampener
came with a straight red for front man Paul McCabe.
After another two wins against Bright
and Kilclief, Liatroim fell to their first defeat
of the year against Teconnaught. After leading by
seven points at half time, Liatroim were crippled
by the double sending off of two of their main players
(Blain Doyle and Simon McCartan). The remaining thirteen
men played bravely but could not contain the Teconnaught
onslaught. Liatroim then looked their usual selves
against Darragh Cross. The rampant attack of the Fontenoys
was too much for Darragh with goals coming from Mickey
Owens, Simon McCartan, Gerard Murphy and Seamus O’Rourke.
A brilliant league campaign was
ended on 13th May with an unexpected defeat at the
hands of league runners-up Breadagh, although there
were some good points to take from the game including
the displays of Blain Dolye, Simon McCartan and Martin
Doyle.
