Hurling:
Down Division 1:
Bredagh 1-08 v Portaferry 1-15
at Cherryvale, Belfast
Portaferry earned a merited 7
point victory over a dogged Bredagh
played on a warm balmy evening
in the leafy suburbs of south
Belfast to maintain their challenge
for the Walter Moreland Cup. It
was the Ports who led from start
to finish and opened their account
with Robert Magee and Richard
Murray on target. Bredagh stayed
in touch with points of their
own from full forward Alistair
Mc Allister and midfielder Paul
Kelly. The away side started to
exert more influence on the game
with Sean Young and Ryan Conlan
on top in the full back line whilst
Connel Trainor made some telling
clearances from the half back
line. Kevin Mc Carthy, Robert
Magee and Nigel Kelly increased
the Ports lead as they went in
at half time with a 3 point lead
8 points to 5.
The men in maroon and white made
a real fist of it in the second
period and in fact reduced the
margin to a solitary point after
a scrambled goal. With Danny Hughes
formerly of Ballycran and Down
belying his years at centre half
back it took two Portaferry substitutions
to steady the ship. Niall Magee
who was introduced with 15 minutes
to go scored some wonderful long
range frees and a cracker of a
penalty which rattled the back
of the Bredagh net to ensure a
deserved if not hard earned two
points.
Both teams had some real star
performers in particular for the
home side Danny Hughes was outstanding
whilst Paul Kelly at midfield
had a real ding dong battle with
Paul Smyth. Ryan Conlan and Trainor
never put a foot wrong in defence
whilst Richard Murray in attack
offered a real outlet for Paddy
Mc Nally's puck outs. However
Sean Young with his telling interceptions
and first time clearances was
undoubtedly the star player on
view and him together with super
sub Niall Magee with 1-05 ensured
that this league title will go
to the wire. Portaferry prop up
the table with 10 wins, 1 defeat
and no draws with a points total
of 20 points, Liatroim lie in
second 4 points behind with 2
games in hand.
