Table Quiz on Friday
- The first club table quiz of the
year takes place this Friday night
(Feb 29th) at the Slaney Inn. Starting
at 9pm, it promises to be a great
night's entertainment so come along,
get your team together and see if
you can reproduce the feats of such
classic teams as The Crafty Three,
the Magnificent 7, Ready 4 the Road
& The Pokers who now have their
place in club history.
Senior Fixtures
Confirmed - The fixtures for the
All County league Division 3 have
been finalised and as expected the
action gets underway early, on Sunday
week (March 9th). The seniors travel
the short distance to Ardtole to
face derby rivals Ardglass in the
opener and then host Glenn and Glassdrumman
(relegated from Div 2 last year)
on successive weekends (Sun, Mar
16th and Easter Monday, 24th respectively).
Before the month is out, Saul will
complete their 4th game away to
Carryduff who also faced the drop
last season. All the fixtures are
now on the website (www.saul-gac.com).
Fixtures for all
other teams have yet to be finalised
by the East Down Board and Ladies
County Board.
Teams Roundup &
Training Times - Most of the club
teams are now up and running for
the 2008 season and preparations
for the season are building pace.
The seniors, reserves
and minors are in training on Tuesday
nights at the De La Salle (8pm)
and on Fridays at Saul (7pm). The
senior squads have already had a
good workout away to Steelstown,
Derry and the minors had their first
challenge game at Castlewellan on
Sunday last to shake off the early
season cobwebs. This Sunday, the
seniors will play a challenge with
local rivals Kilclief in their final
runout before the league starts
on March 9th with the trip to Ardglass.
The U16's under
John Cunningham and Barry Quayle
are training on Sunday's at 11.30am
sharp at Saul pitch. Of course a
significant percentage of the squad
are also in schools finals this
week also with the De La Salle and
RedHigh teams.
The U14s (managers
Eddie Harney, Tony Molyneaux) have
seen good numbers attending both
the indoor and outdoor training
sessions. Training continues this
week on Thursday night at Saul Hall
between 6:30 & 7:30p.m. This
will be followed by a parents meeting
until 8pm. Parents are reminded
that all outstanding memberships
are due this Thursday. Training
moves to the pitch on Sundays starting
at 11.15a.m. New players are welcome.
The U12 boys (managers
Paul Dunlop, Gary Hazzard) will
begin training on March 9th - watch
this space for details.
In girls football,
the U16 & U14 girls teams (with
Irene Fitzsimons, Margaret Laverty
& Paul Fitzsimons) have been
training in Saul hall on Wednesday
nights starting at 7.30pm and Sunday
last saw the first outdoor session.
Training will continue on Sundays
at 12.30pm for the teams along with
the Weds indoor session. The U12
girls with managers Paul & Donna
Vaughan, will start training on
Sunday coming, also at 12.30pm at
the pitch.
De La Salle &
RedHigh Schools successes - Congratulations
to both De La Salle and St Patrick's
Grammar School in progressing to
Ulster finals last week with victories
in the Arthurs Cup and Loch An Iuir
semi-finals respectively. This week
sees both schools look to secure
the silverware and the club wishes
both schools all the best in doing
so. De La Salle reached the final
with a 3 point win over Sacred Heart,
Omagh last week and now they face
Bessbrook in the final on Friday
in Clones. Good luck to the squad
and especially the Saul lads - Christopher
Laverty, Conor Curran, Jude McLaughlin,
Peter Russell and Andrew Maginn.
Across the tarmac, the RedHigh have
also been performing brilliantly
and after outshooting St Patrick's
Keady in the semi, they take on
St Louis Ballymena on Saturday at
Casement Park. After narrowly losing
out in last years final, we hope
they can overturn that this year
and with the help of the Saul players
- Rory Mullen, Cathail and Deaglan
Arnold plus Timothy Russell, we
know they will give it their all.
All the best to both squads - you're
doing Down football proud - bring
home the cups.
