Saul Notes - Nov 2nd 2008

Saul GAC Club Notes for week of November 2nd 2008
Saul successful in East Down Scor-na-nog semi-final – Saul had a successful first cultural outing for the 2009 season when all of the Scor na nog representatives successfully qualified for the East Down final. Superb performances handed 1st places to the club in the Ballad Group (Grainne Laverty, Roisin Sloan, Cristina Holland, Orla Holland and Sarah McVeigh), Instrumental Music (Cristina Holland, Sarah McVeigh, Michael McMullan, Paul Riordan, Brian Riordan) and Novelty Act (Niall Laverty, Owen McVeigh, Grainne Laverty, Roisin Sloan, Cristina Holland, Orla Holland and Sarah McVeigh) with Roisin Sloan in Recitation and Grainne Laverty in Solo Singing also grabbing a place in the final. As usual, the teams were well supported and will hopefully build on Sunday’s success in the East Down Scor-na-nog final which takes place at 3pm on Sunday, November 16th in Dromara. Well done to all involved and good luck for the final.
U13s suffer narrow defeat in opener – Saul 2-8 Bryansford 3-6: Saul U-13 boys entertained Bryansford on Sunday and were pipped by just a point at the end of a close encounter. The lads started the strongest and quickly established the lead with superb points from Cathal Sloan and Ciaran Harney. However, Bryansford settled and began to dominate around all sectors of the field and points quickly followed to put the visitors ahead at the half way stage of the first half. Saul kept in touch with points from Tony Molyneaux and Ciaran Harney but almost immediately the Saul defence was breached and Bryansford were gifted two soft goals. Eoghan Sands had a brilliant debut in the Blue and Gold shirt and lobbed over a wonderful point to leave the half-time score - Saul 0-5 -v- Bryansford 2-4.
Saul looked a more determined team in the second-half and began to dominate around mid-field with Paul McMullan and Cathal Sloan winning a lot of possession and this created the opportunity for the gutsy Ciaran Harney to drill the ball low into the Bryansford net. Joshua Murray at full forward was proving difficult to contain and Saul doubled its goal tally with a great strike by Martin Holland to put the lads ahead. Bryansford however had an impressive five minute spell with some excellent points and a comedy of errors in the Saul full back line resulted in a third goal for Bryansford despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Sam McKee. Ciaran Harney had a blatant penalty appeal turned down when he was fouled within the Bryansford square and it looked that it was not going to be Saul’s day. Cathal Sloan and Joshua Murray fired over consolation points in the final minutes but the Bryansford ran out one point winners. The final score was Saul 2-8 -v- Bryansford 3-6. Training continues on Thursday (5.45 - 7.15pm) with another league match on Sunday.
U10s have an international finish to the season - The under 10s completed their playing season on a high at the weekend with Saul's own International Rules Test match. Much like last Friday's Ireland v Australia contest, this was a rivetting clash between two evenly matched teams. The catching and kicking skills on display were exceptional with some superb "marks" by the likes of Darren McMullan, Mark Curran and Peter Hamilton. Lorcán Harney and Peter Lennon's goalscoring touch was just like Benny Coulter's, while Pierce Laverty and Sé McComiskey had a real ding-dong battle in the middle of the field. The younger lads such as Shane O'Hare, Jack Fitzsimons and Aodhán Harney showed up brilliantly and Conor Magee, Sé Molloy and Daniel Napier have had tremendous seasons at this level and adapted quickly to these new rules. The Primary 4 kids - Ruairi Quinn, Niall Laverty, Peter Ataliotis, Conor Buick and Ruairi O'Hare - were real stars on the day. The 2008 playing season was then rounded off with snacks and Drinks - kindly provided by Gary and Karen Laverty.
The under 10 management would like to thank all players and their parents for their contribution in making 2008 such an enjoyable and successful season. Well done to all involved!
