winning start against Warrenpoint in
higher division

St John’s
5-04 v 2-02 St Peter’s, Warrenpoint
Wed 2nd May
St John’s camogie team got off to a
flying start in the first Division Three
game when they entertained St Peter’s on
a sunny evening at
St John’s.
The tempo of the game belied the fact
that this was the first competitive game
for either team this year. The general
quality of the camogie played suggested
that we were on a higher plane that that
offered up last year and the performance
and scoreline demonstrated that the
St John’s girls are comfortable at this level.
Eoin Walsh must have had his charges well wound up for they
started with great gusto. Siobhan
McGeown was in determined mood in
midfield and along with Martina
Cunningham ensured that the early
traffic was towards the St Peter’s goal.
Caroline Ward was first on the
scoresheet with a point and then a goal.
Anita Murphy netted again before two
major scores from Sinead Walsh, only
recently deployed to the forward line,
gave
St John’s a commanding lead with only 10
minutes gone. Shileen McDonald’s
contribution to Sinead’s second goal
cannot go unrecorded for it was her run
and pass that set Sinead up for the
score.
That opening ten minutes gave the Johnnies a winning cushion.
St Peter’s battled back bravely for the
rest of the half and managed to outscore
St John’s
by three to two to reduce the half-time
margin to 4-3 to 1-2. Sinead Lennon only
had to make a couple of saves as the
defenders in front of her kept the
opposing forwards under close attention
at all times and forced them to scoot a
number of wides from out the field.
Sinead Walsh from a free and Caroline
Ward were the other St John’s scorers in
the first half.
Anita Murphy netted at the start of the second period to
immediately know any hopes St Peter’s
may have had of staging a revivial. The
excitement petered out of the game
after. Both sides continued to attack
but fired more wides that anything else.
St John’s were still on top throughout
but the only statistical indication of
this was that they shot more wides.
Sinead Walsh added another point for the
Johnnies and St Peter’s had the
consolation of getting the last score of
the game. But the points belonged to St
John’s who will be encouraged by this
fine start. With such a young and
obviously talented squad they are well
capable of building upon this opening
night success.
