By Teconnaught
Barry Hollands' late goal gave Teconnaught
a share of the spoils in this highly charged encounter
at Newry. The goal arrived at a crucial moment with
Teconnaught 3 points behind with just two minutes
left to go on the clock. The first half was scrappy
and was primarily dominated by a strong Glenn side
who were given a 1:1 lead in the first minute.
However the visitors were not put
off by this and showed true resolve to fight back.
Inside 10 minutes the influential Sammy Madine grabbed
Teconnaught a goal and the Annacloy side were right
back in contention. After that it was more or less
a contest between the Free takers as the sides stayed
level for most of the half with Dominic Mulholland
and Darragh Fitzsimons rediscovering their form which
had left them in previous games. The sides were level
for the majority of the first half until the quick
thinking corner forwards of Glenn combined to put
an unstoppable shot to the bottom corner of Gareth
Walsh's net. That was the final score of the first
half and left the scores at half time Glenn 2:6 v
1:6 Teconnaught.
Teconnaught were again slow to get
started at the beginning of the second half and allowed
Glenn to increase their lead to 5 points. However
this young Teconnaught side just don't know when to
lie down and spirited on by enthusiatic supporters,
subs and the management of Jim and Robbie Green they
showed their true character and started to play impressive
football amid wreckless challenges from the frustrated
Glenn players.
Dominic Mulholland and Darragh Fitzsimons
continued their scoring form in the second half and
were assisted by Owen Flanagan and Henry Green. Glenn
kept Teconnaught at arms length and tried to maintain
this five point cushion. However, the visitors then
began to put together some cohesive football which
challenged a strong Glenn defence. The Glenn machine
began to bubble and finally burst with two dismissals
for separate off the ball incidents on 50 and 55 minutes
respectively.
Fuelled by this extra burst of enthusiasm
Teconnaught grabbed another point from Barry Holland
which left the score at 2:12 to 1:12. From the kick
out Owen Flanagan showed exceptional ability in fielding
and punted a long ball in to the waiting Holland who
netted soccer style. That left it 2:12 to 2:12 and
with two minutes left to play the Teconnaught side
showed the spirit instilled into them in the training
field to hold on for a deserved draw with a very strong
Glenn outfit who must be favourites for the junior
Championship and Division 4 titles.
Despite missing several key players,
Teconnaught were served well in defence by John Smith,
Colin Casement, Paddy Green and Damian Mulholland.
Simon Kerr and Owen Flanagan , although not a regular
midfield pairing, were exceptional and up front the
visitors were served well by Sammy Madine, Barry Holland,
Dominic Mulholland and Darragh Fitzsimons.
