Carryduff win East Down Reserve League - 02/11/02

On Sunday the 27th October Carryduff won the East Down reserve League narrowly defeating their nearest neighbours and rivals Bredagh by one point in what was a teriffic contes at Carryduff.

The match was played in terrible conditions with about an inch of water lying on the pitch and it was a credit to all the players, referee and supporters that the match went ahead and was a good sporting game. Bredagh started the livliest with Paddy Finnegan converting a free won by Conall Donnelly. Then with five minutes played the referee suspended proceedings for 10 minutes to allow the players to shelter from a very heavy shower of hailstones.

That brief suspension didn't seem to do Bredagh any good as they failed to score again in the half with Carryduff scoring three points. Bredagh were unlucky however as Malachy Smyth managed to get a fist to a high dropping ball on the edge of the square only to see it hit the post and Liam McGarry belt the rebound narrowly wide.

Half-Time Carryduff 0-3 - Bredagh 0-1

In the second half Carryduff started off the quickest with two scrappy goals from Dallan McAleenan and Jason Scott. Bredagh now trailed by 8 points and looked the beaten team.

But the introduction of Johnny Cleary, Henry Deasly and Conall Toland gave Bredagh renewed impetus and within minutes of Cleary's introduction he won a penalty which he duly converted. A few minutes later Bredagh looked to be back in it with another goal by Conor O'Keefe as he followed up a rebound from a Eunan O'Brien shot.

Then Carryduff struck a killer blow as Cathal Curran scored a vital goal for them. Instead of lying down Bredagh went up the field and scored another goal through Conor O'Keefe, his fifth against Carryduff this season.

The last ten minutes was all Bredagh and they played with a lot of spirit. Johnny Cleary converted two frees but on the day it just wasn't enough as Carryduff ran home winners by a single point.
