Down GAA Awards - 10/12/02
The 2002 South Down GAA Awards were held
in St Mary’s GAA clubrooms, Burren last Friday evening.
Guests at the function included Jerry Quinn Vice Chairman
of the Down County Board, Donal McCormack County Secretary,
Dan McCartan Central Council delegate, and Sean McCashin
Chairman East Down Board. County PRO Fintan Mussen acted
as Fear a Ti for the night.
The achievements of Club Side Newry Bosco
in lifting both the county minor football championship and
the South Down U12 championship earned them one of the Chairman’s
awards and the performance of Longstone in winning their
first ever county football championship also earned them
recognition. Brendan Coulter who only last week received
the Down Club “Player of the championship” was named as
the South Down GAA Player of the Year.
After lifting the Provincial AIB Club
of the year award at the start of the season Clonduff lifted
the South Down club of the year award.
The awards presented were;
Footballer of the year; Brendan Coulter (Mayobridge),
runners up Conor Daly (Rostrevor) and Daniel Hughes (Saval).
Juvenile referee; Peter McClorey (An Riocht),
runners up Denis Cotter(Longstone) Brendan Cranney (Burren).
Adult referee; Jim McGeough (Mayobridge),
runners up Leo Smyth(Mayobridge) and Colm Broderick(Clann
Na Banna ).
Chairman’s awards; Longstone, Bosco and Mayobridge
Club of the Year; Clonduff.
Hall of Fame Johnnie Donaghy Clann Na Banna.
