U14 League Match Bredagh V Drumaness

U14 League Match Bredagh V Drumaness

Thursday 9th June 2005 Cherryvale

A very determined U14 Bredagh Camogie team faced Drumaness in this rescheduled match at Cherryvale on Thursday 9th June. The first quarter saw sustained energy and effort from the Bredagh girls, and the Drumaness girls didn’t really get started. There was great work in defence by Maeve Hollywood, while Laura McClorey and Nicole O’Connor dominated mid-field. Two first half goals from Leenane Mellotte and Cathy Short put the Bredagh girls into the lead, and this continued right up to the half time whistle. However, in the second half, Drumaness found their composure.

Their superior strength and skill began to win over against a tiring Bredagh team. Some spectacular runs from Drumaness’ Aisling Ferris resulted in the visitors scoring 2 goals and 3 points without reply. While Bredagh didn’t score in the second half, they can take great heart from this game. They fought right to end and came tantalisingly close to scoring the equaliser on three occasions in the last five minutes, during which they had the Drumaness goal mouth under siege. One of these was a beautiful ground stroke from Christina Boyle who drove the ball from 20 metres only to be thwarted by a lovely save by the Drumaness goalkeeper.

There were sterling displays on the Bredagh team from Aoife Jackson, Róisín McAlister (Capt.) and Rachel Graham in backs, and Chloe Dougan worked tirelessly in forwards. A special mention has to go to Laura McClorey who worked consistently for the full match. She was closed down on several occasions but still managed to maintain possession and move the ball forward, showing great determination, setting a very good example for the younger players. Best for Drumaness were Laura Boyd and Bronagh Boyd in backs, Aisling Ferris in midfield and Hannah bell in forwards.

While the end result was a win for Drumaness and disappointment for the Bredagh girls, they should be congratulated on an excellent display against an established and experienced team. Their hard work and sheer determination prevented a much wider margin, and each and every one of them deserves a pat on the back!

Full time score -Drumaness 2-3 Bredagh 2-0
