Allstar Tip Keeper Brendan Cummins
Tipperary
hurler Brendan Cummins retained his M
Donnelly All Ireland Poc Fada title last
Saturday in a highly entertaining and
competitive Poc Fada contest held on Annaverna
mountain Ravensdale.
The unique
all Ireland hurling competition is played
on a challenging 5km mountain course.
Brendan narrowly missed out on equaling
his own course record of 48 set three
years ago. It was a perfect day, condition
wise and a large crowd of spectators from
all over Ireland followed the hurlers
around the mountain course.
Downs
Graham Clarke once again finished second
with a personal best round of 51 pocs
whilst Offalys Shane O Connor finished
third, with 52 pocs, just metres ahead
of Paul Mulanny from Laoise who also had
52 pocs. Previous Champions Albert Shanahan
of Limerick finished on 54 pocs and Clares
Davy Fitzgerald had 57 pocs. Aidan Ryan
of Waterford and John Grealish from Galway
both completed their Poc Fada course in
55 pocs along with Galways Keith Carr.
Fermanaghs Jason Mc Manus had 58 pocs
and Clares Brendan Mc Namarra had 57 pocs.
There was all Ireland glory for Pat Mulanny
and Shane O Connor as they won the Comortas
Béirte (pairs) trophies with a
combined score of 104 pocs.
All hurlers
who had participated in the 2007 M Donnelly
Poc Fada showed remarkable talent and
strength which ensured a tough and close
contest. Brendan Cummins waas delighted
to retain his title, which now mwans his
Poc Fada All Ireland medal tally is three.
Leinster
representative Lyndsey Condell claimed
the M Donnelly Poc Fada title with a narrow
metres victory over Munster representaive
Patricia Jackman. Both camogie players
finished on 30 pocs. Aaron Murphy from
Limerick won the under 16 Poc Fada with
24 pocs. Michael Devlin from Antrim was
second with 27 pocs and Daíre Mc
Kernan from Louth was third with 32 pocs.
Prior to the stat of the Poc Fada there
was a poignant moment when Piper Patrick
Matin played a lament for Poc Fada piper
Donall Duffy who since 1961 had piped
at the Poc Fada. Donall passed away last
year. The late Paul Magee father of Poc
Fada Mountain Course committee member
Peter, Peggy Hoey wife of honorary President
Peter Hoey and Tom Casey who had participated
in the inaugural 1960 Poc Fada, were all
remembered through a minutes silence.
