A former South Down sporting
legend has been remembered at a special ceremony
in Rostrevor. Derek Fegan, who excelled at
hurling, Gaelic football and soccer, both
in Rostrevor and Downpatrick, made a significant
contribution to training young hurlers in
the village. Following his recent untimely
death, a number of those whom he had coached
and played with, got together to launch the
Derek Fegan Memorial Shield.
At the ceremony they presented
it to his wife, Mary. The Shield will be presented
annually to the winner of the hurling skills
competition for the next seven years in St
Bronagh’s Primary School, Rostrevor.
There are also trophies for the runners-up.
A spokesman for the group
said “Derek was a gentleman who encouraged
children to participate in the sport of their
choice. He had a particular passion for hurling
and he encouraged all of us to appreciate
the skill of the game and to develop that
skill to the best of our abilities. It is
only fitting that we should pay tribute to
him in this way.”
