Handball in Co. Down continues to grow in popularity although this applies mainly to the Saval club where the numbers playing are steadily rising year on year. That this is not being replicated throughout the county is due to lack of recognition by the clubs of the potential handball courts have to offer.

Co. Down Handball Leagues
The four top teams in the county; Downpatrick, Clonduff, Saval and Carryduff competed in div. 1 with Downpatrick proving once again to be the strong force in Co. Down handball.

The second division was fought out between 8 teams from Saval and 1 from Clonduff . The league finished in early December with the outcome not decided until the final round. The Savalmore team of Stephen Sands, Dessie Sands and Brian Turley took the honours with the Sheeptown team of Finbarr McNally, Paul Greenan and Garry Sands taking the runners up spot.

Co. Down Handball Championships
Paul Shields from Clonduff won the Northern Bank junior 2 singles tide defeating Mall McManus from Downpatrick.

Paddy Havern & James McNally from Saval defeated Collie Turley & Barrie McCoy in the junior 2 doubles final. In a repeat of last year's masters final between two Saval players, it was Seamus Sands who reversed last years result defeating Brian Havern this time round. The masters doubles final was also an all Saval affair with Seamus Sands & Eamon McCarthy narrowly defeating Cathal Digney & Pethr McSherry. Paul Girvan was on top form to defeat Pethr McSherry in the over 45's singles final. In the over 45's doubles Brian Havem & Philip Campbell defeated Paul Girvan & Jim Harland.

The division 2(a) championship was won by the young talent Stephen Sands who won both his games against the wily campaigner Gavin Quinn who can play better than he showed in the final. The division 2(b) championship was also won by another blossoming young Went in the shape of Kevin McCarthy who defeated Fergal McConville in a much closer final. Kevin recovered to win the deciding third game having lost the second to a determined Fergal.

First Trust North Ulster League
Five teams from Co. Down now com- pete in the highly competitive Ulster leagues. Clonduff, who were playing their first year in div.1 and Donal Armstrong in the team put up a great show against the cream of Ulster hand- ball. Downpatrick, with Tom Savage and Co are also still holding their own in div.1 which is of a very high standard.

Saval had a record breaking year in the Ulster League with all three teams gaining promotion. Paddy Havern, James McNally, Seamus Sands & Eamon McCarthy won division 4 at their first attempt. Peter MeSherry, Brian Havern, Cathal & Jarlath Digney were runners-up in div.5 and Collie Turley, Barire McCoy, Declan & Gerard McCarthy won div. 6 in their first year in the Ulster League!

Down Teams Contest All-Ireland Feile Final
The Juvenile handballers of Downpatiiek guided by Martin Murphy and those of Saval guided by Brian Havern, done their county proud when they defeated all competition to contest the All-Ireland Feile final at the Rossa club on the Shaws road in Belfast in July. The final was a very close affair which Downpatrick won by just 5 points overall. Well done to all concerned.
