Bredagh v Iveagh Bosco

Bredagh Ladies won their first Down Senior championship on Friday 13th September by defeating reigning champions Iveagh Bosco in Downpatrick.

A nervy opening saw Bredagh concede a goal within the first couple of minutes, after a high ball from Michaela Downey caused confusion in the Bredagh defence.

The Bredagh response was immediate when Joanne Lavery's exquisite pass to Geraldine Grimley split the Iveagh defence. After what seemed like an eternity Geraldine slid the ball past the Iveagh goalkeeper to get Bredagh back on level terms. Joanne Lavery then popped over a free to put Bredagh in the lead.

In a frantic opening ten minutes, the goals continued to fly in. Great ball-winning in the Bredagh defence was undone when the ball was given away and a great run by Michaela Downey resulted in another Iveagh goal. Again Bredagh stormed back and got a goal when another class pass from Joanne Lavery was punched to the net by the quick-thinking Lorraine McCaffrey.

Joanne Lavery continued to torment the Iveagh defence and beat a couple of defenders to score a classy goal to finally settle Bredagh down. Bredagh's best spell of the match saw intelligent running from Jacqui Clarke, Mairead Guinness and Geraldine Grimley yield three more points for Joanne Lavery and a well-taken point for Mairead Guinness.

At that point Iveagh's Aoibhin Downey sprained an ankle and was forced to withdraw from the match.

When play resumed after the injury Iveagh started to gain some momentum and managed to claw back two points. Iveagh had a chance to narrow the gap to two points when Bredagh goalkeeper Fionnuala McAtamney produced an excellent save to deny Michaela Downey another goal.

A great point from a narrow angle by Cathy Gallagher and a point from Joanne Lavery before half-time allowed Bredagh to take a good lead into half-time.

Half-Time Score: Bredagh 3-07 - Iveagh Bosco 2-03

After half-time Bredagh continued to dominate possession with good ball-winning from Mairead Guinness, Cathy Gallagher and Jacqui Clarke preventing Iveagh from gaining clean possession in the middle of the park.

Further points from Joanne Lavery and Geraldine Grimley increased the Bredagh advantage but Iveagh Bosco fought back and scored another goal when the Iveagh forwards pounced on a breaking ball in the Bredagh defence to cut the deficit to 6 points.

Martina McCafferty scored an excellent point for Bredagh before Iveagh's best spell of the match saw Bredagh under pressure. The Bredagh defence were strong in the face of continued Iveagh attacks with Jacqui McAllister and Maura McArdle breaking up a lot of attacks in the half-back line.

Lorraine McCaffrey scored a point from a very narrow angle to ease the pressure. Joanne Lavery capped an amazing individual display with 2 more points to seal the victory for an ecstatic Bredagh team.

Final Score: Bredagh 3-13 - Iveagh Bosco 3-04

The final whistle was the signal for a pitch invasion to kick off the Bredagh celebrations. Bredagh captain Siobhan McCarney and mascot Cliona McCarney lifted the cup to the delight of the Bredagh supporters.
