Barney Treanor (Burren) RIP

Monday 10th February 2020

Coiste Chontae an Dúin and the family that is Down GAA are saddened to learn this evening of the death of Barney Treanor of Burren.

Barney was a member our All Ireland winning Team Management of 1991 and was widely acknowledged for his wise counsel as a Team Selector.  He played a major part in our All Ireland success in 1991.

Barney will also be remembered as one of our most prominent referees for many years and when he retired from refereeing he was not lost to this aspect of our games as he became an active member of the then Referees Campaign Committee and in 1983 was Manager of the Down Referees Team who won the All Ireland 7 A-Side Competition.

Barney was also involved as an Administrator with his Club, with the South Down Committee and in 1988 he was elected as Vice Chairperson of the County Committee.

Barney gave a lifetime of service to the GAA in his own quiet manner, he gave of his very best in every task that he undertook, he was well known throughout Ireland and was a great ambassador for Down GAA.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Barney's sons and daughters, his many grandchildren , his great grandchildren and great great grandchildren at this sad time, to the Gaels of Burren we also offer our sympathies on the loss of a great Gael.

Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam.
